View Full Version : Love Is A Series Of Scars
Amazing song in my opinion. A wonderfully written and well constructed song. Hopefully he'll do it live during his headlining tour as he hasn't been doing it in his recent set.

I was hoping that this was going to be on the new album too, I haven't heard this song live either :(

love is a series of scars is a song that i've never heard live... and it wouldn't be on the new album as it's the last track on the old album :)

Actually, Duke rerecord a few older songs for the new album, I was hoping that this was going to be one of them :-)
Duke sung a beautiful version of this song at the Borderline (London) last year, almost a-capella - the crowd was mesmerised!

I'm going to put a request in for one of the Empire gigs.
What are the chances Duke?

How about asking the maestro if we can vote for/decide his setlist?

As cool as I think this would be, it also think it's never going to happen! :-)
Worth an ask though... over to you Duke?

This song has a tenderness that just cannot be summed up by the limitation of words. Purely and simply.......I love it!!!!

I liked this song when I first heard it. Beautifully understated and amazingly sung.
Trouble is, last night I just found myself in a situation remarkably similar. Not sure exactly what situation Peter is singing about, but it flippin well feels like the one I just went through. Now the song makes me cry... in more Duke words "Love is hard to do".
It just leaves the picture with "...they try to work it out". Don't know how it ends... Life goes on. Might come back later and post a follow-up when a bit more water's gone under the bridge.
Blessings,
Tim
It's certainly a beautiful, poignant song.
Hope you work it out and it ends happily for you, Tim...

Water under the bridge... sorry for the depressing previous post! Things are much better now. Still love and hate the song at the same time though!

So glad to see a thread for this track. I have been playing it over and over recently, it's so moving, breaks your heart. I have to agree, would love to hear it as a solo at one of Duke's gigs. We'll have to put some pressure on.

I don't think Duke wants to play the song live though - a time and a place and all that - and, true enough, I think the last track on the album is the place for it... It'd be hard to get back into the concert after hearing that song.
Just for anyone who hasn't checked the Carlisle review page...... I got my wish and Duke played the song live!!!
And amazing it was too...... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ic0Gp-B_lPE
And from now on I will no longer be putting pressure on him to do it live again! But I do still think it's an amazing song that he should keep doing if the mood is right
I agree with sinecurea though, it's definately suited for the last track on the album. Fits so well. But I don't think it dampened the mood of the gig at all - we were dancing around at the end (much to everyone elses amusement I think! Everyone should have danced - would have been amazing!)
Thanks for the lovely video clip, Ian. It does sound amazing live - you lucky thing you! :)

What a beautiful version of the song, it demands the full attention of everyone present.
Nice grainy 'silent movie' effect Ian, adds to the tenderness of the song and performance.

Indeed. But I?ve never heard such a beautiful soundtrack to a ?silent movie?! :) Immense. That?s all I can describe this song as. I?m so glad that others think so too and not just me. I was starting to worry!
I also wish I could have captured the whole of the song (I think the last verse is missing) but my memory card ran out of space! Never mind, still very much a great live song and I had such fun at the gig.

I have listened to this song over and over again and each time it is more beautiful. It is one of those songs that just really gets to you. It is so poignant and touching. So simple and so heartfelt. I'm not generally the crying type but this song has brought tears to my eyes so many times. I feel music very deeply but this song touches me in a way not many songs can do.
It is a song I would love to hear live, but not at a gig. I agree with what has been posted already, there is a time and a place for this song and I dont think I would like to hear it in a room full of people. I think it is a very personal song, in that I think anyone who appreciates the beauty of this song can identify with some part of it on a very personal level. Too personal for a live show I think. IMO. I know when I sing a song like this I give so much of myself to the piece, you leave yourself very open and vunerable singing something like this... very tough for a live show.

This has been top of my playlist now for the past few weeks. Just can't get the words out of my head.
Having never been "properly" in love, this is what I think it feels like. That song. Opening up yourself to someone, letting someone in. And with them, letting the propensity to FEEL, whether it be happiness or hurt, in too. "She just hurt like hell, but in her heart she knew she loved him"...Can love overcome everything?
Wow. Just pure gorgeous....what a beauty of a little song. I love the simplicity of it, the softness and gentleness of the piano accompanied with those lyrics, simply amazing. I think everyone can relate to that true to real life song. If this had been on his new album "Songs from the Deep forest", it would have been my favourite without a doubt. Thanxs a mill for the link Ian. :)
Can love overcome everything?
I don't know if this was a rhetorical question or not but I'd like to answer and say, in my experience, yes I believe it can... :)

It was a rhetorical question, of sorts...but thank you all the same!
I guess in my heart I have hope that the answer you gave is true...

Love can overcome the hardest obsticles, no matter what!
I would put my hope in love before alot in this world!

hhmmmm deep.
well im a cynic when it comes to this stuff... I used to think along the lines of Sian, Guinness et al that love could overcome everything and make everything ok.. I guess for me it did for a while. But nothing lasts forever.. and sooner or later those feeling have to turn to what Sneaky mentions - love being the obstacle!
Its tough, there is no doubt about it - nothing easy about being in love. But when you find the right person its worth the effort. It may last it may not but either way you get something very very special, and lots of memories that you can keep forever... kinda like this song!

and therefore is unrequited love life's greatest rhetorical question?
now that requires some serious thought. I missed this the first time I read the new posts...
Gr? eagmhaiseach - I remember the first time I heard that phrase studying some old irish poem about Ireland, probably Pearse anyway... point being... its kind of a catch phrase i use too often. Unrequited love.... what is that ya reckon? I think people use it a lot to describe the feelings they have for someone who doesnt feel the same way as them - but is that really love? Im sure you can love someone who does not love you... but... I always think of love as a very mutual thing... hard to know if you can really love someone who doesnt care the same way for you. Hmmmmm anyway... im rambling.
I guess in a way Sneaky you are probably right! On many levels. And maybe just maybe sometimes it is better as a rhetorical question... afterall Love is a Series Of Scars... maybe sometimes its better not to know. But... then you might end up never taking chances and missing something very special! Life long question - and almost certainly rhetorical... i dont think anyone will ever know the answer to provide one anyway.
right... now.. gimme some utter tripe to listen to and de-serious-ify my mind again.
