I have thought this again and again and again when listening to dukes records....

Does anybody know or can the duke himself tell us the meaning behind any of his songs?

I wonder do songs like last night i nearly died and wake up scarlett have a real life meaning to the main man himself!?!

last night i nearly died used to be always introduced as a story of falling asleep behind the wheel while on tour and narrowly missing a collision with the central reservation.

Wow, anymore interesting explainations like this?

Someone please tell me what "slip of a girl" and "no cover up" are about?

I know that Paul Wilkonson wrote slip of a girl, but im sure someone out there knows...

i remeber the duke telling that story a couple of times too

i also remember him introducing one song and saying that it was about imaginary bank robbers or something or something. i cant really remember that well it was a long long time ago.

and one song aboutdrinking too much and listeneing to bon jovi records. i think that may have been freewheel. again. my memory is atrocious

theres my review from the first time i saw the duke in feb 2004. i've noted a couple of meanings that duke mentioned of his songs. i just wish i'd written down which songs.

I remember him introducing that as being about being locked in a cupboard with someone who you've only just found out has robbed a bank - or something like that!

I've been wracking my brain about an introduction the Duke gave to Brixton Leaves when I first saw him - I think it came about after he'd played a bad gig for which some record company people were supposed to be turning up for and never arrived. And after that he was waiting, at the airport I think, feeling at odds with the world, and that's kind of where the song came from.

My memory's a bit sketchy on this one but I'm pretty sure it was something along those lines.

Have you ever heard of L'art pour l'art? It's a fin de si?cle ideal and the english translation basically means: "art for arts sake".... But really its about how beautiful things mean only beauty.....I think this is what we should all do with Duke's music, as it is so consumingly beautiful. I would feel guilty prying into his life and experiences and would rather achieve my own meanings from songs, if any.... it means you really have to listen and I find that it makes it more interesting from a personal point of view.....although I'm not saying I would not love t know how the mind of a genius works......
