once upon a time a long long time ago i asked the duke to play carly simon's "nobody does it better". i was quite drunk but it was beautiful nonetheless.
Every time I hear Ben Kweller's 'Falling' I think what a good job the Duke would make of it (probably a little obscure).
Also, I considered that something by The Magnetic Fields would be good (maybe 'I Think I Need a New Heart').
Other possibilities include 'Narcolepsy' by the Ben Folds Five, '16 Military Wives' by The Decemberists and (probably my favourite selection) Aimee Mann's 'Wise Up'.
tippex i have never heard of any one of those songs that u have just mentioned! i apologise for my ignorance. (forgive me)
but hey i think duke could make a great cover version of any song!
(although quite a number of years ago im sure the duke did a cover of Tom Jones' Deliah! absolutly F____ing amazing. one of my very favourites. if ya wanna hear just give me a buzz i'll c wat i can do).
Mmm - I was trying to find something a little different but I think I might have been picking songs that are a little too obscure. (Although you should check them out Dutchess as they're all great songs)
On a related note, last night I had a dream that the Duke was doing a cover of the Scissor Sisters' 'I Don't Feel Like Dancing'. It wasn't very good, though (shows how unreliable dreams can be) and everyone went to the bar/toilet about 30 seconds in. I'm not sure if this means anything - maybe just that the Duke shouldn't cover anything by the Scissor Sisters.

I've heard the Duke do 'Hallelujah' written by Leonard Cohen or the more popular Jeff Buckley and I loved it! Fantastic tune, but maybe it its just cause I'm a sucker for the song!
Also you can see the Duke singing ''Video killed the radio star'' on you tube if anyone wants to check it out! :)

Halleluyah is one of my fave songs, either the Rufas Wainwright or Jeff Buckley version...has anyone got the Duke singing it??
OOH OOH ME TOO!
Would love any mp3s going, Ive got shining light and maps but Im pretty sure everyone has that now. Might have a tiny video piece of him doing 'you are my sunshine' on top of the bar in Lonergans, Clonmel (when I say I might I actually mean Maur might heehee) I'll root around and see what I can find.
On the subject of Duke dreams though! I had a dream that I was at electric picnic with my sister when I saw Duke but he was bust talking to this long haired welsh guy so I left him alone but then when said welsh guy went off I went up and said 'Alright?' and he just looked at me and went 'NO!', I asked why and he said he had just been beaten up! So we went off and were talking when his sister (I dont actually know anything about the women) but in the dream she was really young with dyed red/pink hair and we were talking for ages cos Duke went off but although she was really young, her voice sounded like she was about 40 and had smoked all her life. Then I started spinning on my chair really really really quicjkly...and then I woke up.....
Weird. :?
Clair i am lovin the dream. wats even funnier i know one of dukes sisters really well. dont think she ever smoked though! could b rong!
here i havnet got shining light :( ! can u mabey get it to me or sumthin?!
i remember my dream of duke it was at a big concerty thing and he won the concert competition or sumthin mad like that , and he took a break in between and i was sittin bside his wife hu ended up bein sharon osbourne! and i ended up talkin to duke for hours and became his addopted daughter. seriously someone must have spiked my conflakes the mornin b4 or sumthin, madness.

great signature there dutchess!
i always loved that song... especially that wee bit in the last chorus in the really broad belfast accents... coz you know baybee!!!!!!
superhero was a better song though that was cruelly left off the album :)
Haha whats with the mental dreams?! Seriously...the last thing I ate the night before that dream were sausage rolls...darn Dunnes cheapies got knows what else is in there ha!
Yep I'll get that track to ya no worries, would you prefer it in an email or on cd?? Either way is good with me....
BAH typos galore everywhere! Forgive me peeps I was just relaying the dream so fast that I had no time to check that it made any sense...cos it didnt...

coffee by copeland would be an amazing song for duke to cover. go listen. awesome track.x
Back at you Lander - I'm loving the idea of the Duke doing an Elvis Costello cover - Oliver's Army would be good, or maybe Accidents Will Happen.
I'm just annoyed I didn't think of that first.
Claire u can email the song or cd it. surprise me.!
oh and sneaky bandit that last line in the song is classic, i let my mate listen to it and she killt her self laughin for ages! duke is lethal!
Definitely showing my age here but I would love to Dukes take on Nothing Rhymed by Gilbert O' Sullivan. A very underrated song in my humble opinion.
mac apologies but i have never heard of ur song suggestion ever!!!!

When Ed Harcourt put in an appearance on Tuesday night, Duke said he'd covered some of his songs. I don't think I've ever heard him do any and I'd love to hear "She Fell Into My Arms"... that's a great song. :)

*thinks*
Here i go again on my own by White Snake (it is by white snake isn't?) would be fun done as a proper piano ballad.
The two Ed Harcourt cover's that immeadiately spring to mind as one The Duke would do well to cover would be All Of Your Days Will be Blessed or Shanghai although really he could cover any Ed harcourt and i'd be as happy as LArry (who's Larry?).
The Days Go By Oh So Slow by Nightmare Of You would sound nice in The Duke's tones, as would any song by The Bluetones or Elton John me thinks.
There's a glam rock musical called hedwig and the angry inch which contains the song "The Origins Of love" which I think The Duke would do a fine job on...
i'm sure there's hundreds of songs that would be perfect though!
xxxxx
I heard a snippet of "Working Class Hero" by John Lennon yesterday and think that Duke could do an excellent cover of that too. These could go on forever....

Do it Duke, you've got the (my) album, do it!
First song I heard from the Duke was Freewheel...and then I was hooked! Not sure I really want to know the backround to it though, I've got my own picture in my head of what it means to me

The cover of "Stumble and Fall" is fabulous! I just found out that it's available on iTunes. I don't own a record player, so I won't buy the vinyl singles but now I can listen to it the entire day as well. :D
More nice covers please!

Is there any way that some of these covers can be shared amongst some of us poor folk who have only just discovered the Duke and so haven't been to many gigs? (one presumes most are never going to be released and so I can't see any harm in it - I already have the new album and two EPS on the basis of a single gig :D )

There's a fair whack of stuff on youtube and google video including Drove All Night, You Are My Sunshine and Video Killed The Radio Star :) I know that's not the same as downloaded recordings but they're well worth seeing :)

It's on the Bside of one of the "Portrait" formats.... I think it's the CD as my turntable still isn't working since I got all the differnt ones.
How about a take on "Everybody's got to learn sometime" by The Korgis?
An underrated classic song methinks.
I'd love the idea of Duke Special doing a version at an upcoming concert.

Rockaway Beach - The Ramones

I'd like to hear Peter completely strip down and rearrange a well known 'rocky' song - like he has done most recently with his own 'Freewheel'. I am reminded of the way that Roddy Frame, as Aztec Camera reinvented Van Halen's 'Jump', and Travis did with Britney's 'Hit me baby one more time'. I wonder what he could do with Gnarls Barkley's 'Crazy' for example, or the likes of 'Reet Petite' done in the way he does 'Ain't got no'. Half of the joy of hearing cover versions is when they are completely indistinguishable from the original - so you keep saying 'I know that song, now what is it?' As opposed to Rodrigo y Gabriela's brilliant, reverential but no different 'Wish you were here'. The majesty of Ultravox's 'Vienna' might also be a nice tune to hear him interpret. For my money his 'Drove all night' that he played at the Purcell Rooms was just the most beautiful thing - quite different to, ahem, his segued version of Wham's 'Last Christmas' and 'Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer'!
As opposed to Rodrigo y Gabriela brilliant, reverential but no different 'Wish you were here'.
Try the Sparklehorse & Thom Yorke version. *claps hands* It's fantastic!
Does anybody know where I can get my hands on the cover of Ain't got no, I got life?
Its such an amazing cover but I can't find it anywhere online :(

Given the day that is it I listened to Sgt Pepper on my long drive home for the wkend.. and... it occurred to me that Duke and Chip together would do a great job on one of my fav songs of all time... now I dont normally condone Beatles' covers... but having heard the cover Peter did of 'Dont Let Me Down' I think he could give this a go..... "A Day in the Life" - imagine that bridge section with a little cheese grater/stump fiddle action... and Peter playing that wonderful piano intro....
now THAT would be some cover!!! Only for the greatest mind you..

I was thinking 'When I'm 64' would sound great covered by Duke, Chip could get plenty of stump fiddle action going as well.
