Either:
Love Is A Series Of Scars
Low
Ballad Of A Broken Man
Scarlett
Somethings Make Your Soul Feel Clean
Last Night I Nearly Died
Freewheel.

In other words, I have no idea...

But probably Love Is A Series Of Scars.

I seem to have daily favs, the most recent favs being:
John Lennon Love
Quiet Revolutionaries
You Don't Slow Me Down
Ballad of A Broken Man
but the one I can never get out of my head is :
Love is A Series of Scars, so I guess that must be my fav! If I had to pick one and thats really tough.

It's v. difficult to choose a favourite as I love them all but if I had to narrow it down to four, I'd say, "Salvation Tambourine" the beat is amazing in that one. "No Cover Up" (obviously...) "Love Is a Series of Scars", "Something might happen" (love the piano in the second chorus) and "Freewheel". (amazing vocals) Damn. That's five isn't it!

Lets face it guys.

You can't accually pick a favourite Duke song.

They are all equally as good as each other and depending on what mood your in be it a sad day, happy day, confused day or otherwise you will pick a song which suits that moment of your life!

"You don't slow me down"

Is my choice of the day. For those of you who are lucky enough to have a person very close to you at this time... listen to the words and think about them. Especially the line "You kiss me with little wings, I love your skin on my skin..."

It is truely a moment of magnificant beauty!

At the moment it has to be "This Could Be My Last Day", simply because when I went to see Duke Special in Brighton on 17 Feb, me and hubby got to hear Duke rehearse the harmonies for this with the guest female singer for nearly an hour before the late night concert, in the bar!! :smt041  :smt023 Not that I'm bragging or anything .......

John Lennon Love
Ballad of a Broken Man
Love is a Series of Scars

Well, Portrait was the song that first converted me into a believer in the powers of the Duke, although whenever i first heard the SFDF version on ATL last August, I hated it. Got used to it after a few listens and it probably my favourite track along with No Cover Up. It and This Could Be My lat day r right up there with Hallelujah as one of the most moving songs I've ever heard.

Salvation Tamborine really hit me at first like someone pouring a bucket of cold water over my head, but the when I saw him at Sheffield you could cut the air with a knife when he played This could be my last day, it was paralisingly beautiful like you were the only one in the room and he was singing to you. I think it is the closest my friend has ever had to an outerbody experience. It totally messed her up for about half an hour. Even driving home over the Snake Pass it was almost like she was on planet semibreve-equalls-crotchet. It was a fantastic gig and a beautiful ride home :D over the moors, stars were out and a white hare crossed our path (see the Seth Lakeman song The White Hare).

What I really like about Songs of the Deep Forest is that it is an ALBUM not a load of songs just thrown together.

It's how things used to be done, while it is very diverse and rounded it feels like a body of work from one artist. Of course that's because most pop acts are all made by sound enigeering teams and five producers on the one album while some shallow little bitch (male or female) squeaks into a mike while thinking about whether or not they'll get into Heat magazine this week.

Fair play to Duke, bring on the revolution and pray the populace wakes up to see Simon Cowell for the parasite on music that he is.

Hi Katie. I have an mpeg of this on YouTube I made at Aldershot in May. Certainly, according to the setlist, it has the huge title of ALL THIS HAPPINESS IS OUT OF CONTROL.

I agree it's a good one. I particularly like the lyrics. ;)

Hello all - this song is on YouTube listed as Duke Special- Aldershot 10th May. This version was with Beth Rowley. The song is called 'All this Happiness' and we did it in 4 part harmony at the Wed. Empire show but I don't think anyone did a video of it!

Just watched that thanks. Did you start recording in the middle of the song? Just wondering because what we heard in Galway back in 2006 had much more to the song than this. I must say while the arrangement with Beth et al is lovely, I much prefer just Duke on his own for this one. I'll post the recording somewhere later for ye.

Thanks for that though, interesting to see how the performances grow over time!

Yes,the performances grow and change over time - I find it so interesting that a song can be so different depending on the arrangement. This breathes life into every performance.

Hi Jacqui - just going by what was written on my copy of the setlist wot I nicked after the Aldershot gig, which did indeed have the full title on it.

When you say the Wednesday Empire gig... do you mean in Belfast or the one you did a few days later in Shepherd's Bush? I presume you mean the former, which I wasn't at, as I don't remember hearing it live more than once.

Katie - Nope, recording started about three or four seconds in. The camera takes about 30 seconds to power up and to press buttons to make mpegs once it's on. I turned the camera on as soon as people started walking onto the stage. I was in fact literally arm's length from Pete throughout the gig, which is why the picture's so good.

Shall I do an embed to make life easier? OK.

OLYGw9F8Bic

You'll need to turn the sound way down, as it's very loud!

Didn't expect to be blubbering this early on a Saturday but that did it !!
That was just amazing ... I love the other version , just the title line repeated in ever rising voice .... but the tone ( never quite expresses what I really mean or feel) pathos , honesty of his voice in that just cuts me to the quick.

Wow, that's a totally different way of expressing the same song - I can see why it was initially 'Out of Control'- how intimate and beautiful a performance. I can't believe that he mentioned Strandtown 'cos that's where I live.
On the night the choir rehearsed it Duke was kind enough to explain some of the thoughts behind it. It came from a comment a friend made regarding ultra keen bible-belt christianity in the southern United States.
It was likened to a great big lovely whipped ice cream in a cone. It looks beautiful but tends to press down into the cone i.e. everybody is funnelled in to be the same - anyone not towing the party line is disapproved of. If you don't agree exactly on every point you are branded - a communist? -a radical? - a free thinker? - an artist? and that's even if you are a Christian already. (Dear D.S. I hope I haven't made a hash of that explanation!)
