We've all done it, lying trying and struggling to get to sleep, alarm at 6am and after midnight searching on the (DAB) radio for something, anything to listen to....
Then I heard it, I heard him. What a sound! Sorry guys, you are all fans, and I'm new I heard him (if anyone is interested) being interviewed at length by Alan Robson a Newcastle (upon Tyne) DJ/Presenter from local Metro FM.
Of course you all know about Duke and I basically was treated to a brief story of career so far, with tracks from the new album between the chat. Excellent! Suffice to say, I was wide-awake and scriblbing the name down (in the dark) lest I forget it - NO CHANCE!
Now I begin my education, I registered here, and admittedly know nothing about Duke except that magical sound. Please treat me kindly, and advise where I might find more and become better acquainted with the man and his music.
BTW I'm 42 and this is the first time I've been interestested in "modern/current music" for many a year.
Thanks
Steve

Welcome Steve!!! Sooo glad you discovered Duke and joined us here. Something very wonderful about his music, it has a kinda of magical effect sometimes. I know his music has been described as sounding like Christmas but you know.. it kinda feels like Christmas sometimes! For me anyway! I love that warm glowy feeling.

Thanks for that Katie!
It is very warm, almost like Big Band meets Christmas produced by Phil Spector - I now will need to catch up on the sleep I missed last night.
Tomorrow I will buy the Album and rely on Google, people on here and the web to point me to other purchases. My other half always says I'm impossible to buy for and living in the past. Just wait until she asks the old birthday questions and I reply anything by Duke Special - and especially tickets next time the band visit the north east here. Even the kids will think this grandad got trendy!
Alas it is late now, but I will trawl any threads and have a good look around here when time permits.
Perhaps the box set i read about?

If you have a turntable then yes do! In fact buy it and get a turn table if you dont have one :)
well look out for the curren album, Songs from the Deep Forest as well as Adventures in Gramophone and Your Vandal (EP) which you can buy from the shop on here. That would be a pretty good start :) Enjoy and ask away if you get stuck. im far from an expert on Duke but others will share their knowledge no doubt!

essentially the best (and indeed most obvious) advice i can give you is to buy as much duke special as you can get your grubby little hands on, cause at the end of the day, its all what the french might call 'le tits'.
Welcome to the forum, Steve. I'm a fellow North Easterner and familiar with Alan Robson although sadly I didn't hear the piece you refer to. We're a friendly bunch so if there's anything else you want to know about the Duke, just ask and you're bound to get an answer :) If you're after albums, you need the new Songs From the Deep Forest (on either CD or vinyl boxset) and the previous album Adventures In Gramophone. After that there are loads of EPs etc which you may also wish to track down...;
P.S Keep your eyes open for a gig at Newcastle Cluny next February. I shall see you there :D

My advise Mighty one is to start at the start (* ie: Adventures in Gramophone*) and work your way forward from there.
You will find the evolution of the Duke's songs alot more forthcoming...

Wise words indeed :)
