Hey... I just thought this could be fun... a Random Facts Thread

The idea is to just post something totally random.. it can be a fact about yourself, someone else, or just something general and quirky. Afterall, you learn something new everyday!!!!

This way, its really easy to learn some random totally worthless piece of information.

Today's Katie fact is:

DId you know that...
if you had one of each denomination of the Euro coins, and one of each denomination of Euro note, you would have ?3.88 in coins and ?885 in notes = ?888.88

See... this is why I started it... thats hilarious.. and sad obviously but :)

Also cos I live with the King of random facts... the euro coins fact was what my Dad woke me up with on sunday morning when he brought me tea.... i got 'morning... *hands over cup of tea*.. whats so special about 3.88??' - he didnt even mention the word euro... and i was supposed to guess that at 10am sunday morning having not slept at all lol!!

This is only because your talking about euro money and not sterling and I don't condone this or know that it still works... (sinecura et admin please EDIT or DELETE as nessesary)

Back in the school days, we used to be able to use a 20cent piece as a pound coin in most vending machines... and the funny thing is, it even gave you change out after you got your drink/food!

Did you know that the Eiffel Tower was accully designed and build after a international competition of designers was picked to comemorate the French Revolution.

And its main purpose in life after that was to be used as a telegraphy and radio/TV antenna for the remainder of its life and was possibly the enevitable reason why it wasn't torn down in 1909.

The dishonesty of it all is shocking!!!!!!!!
Have you people no scruples?

On the other hand though, I went inter-railing before the euro currency came in and spent some time in Germany. The old Irish 5p coin fooled the vending machines into thinking it was a deutschmark which in turn saved me from certain starvation.

Question, was the Sterling Pound coin designed specifically for throwing at football referees?

Starvation reared its ugly head recently too! On a trip to Southampton last year I discovered that Northern Irish Sterling is not an acceptable form of payment to the proprietors of shops and (ahem) certain drinking establishments.
It's funny what you learn along the way.
Actually funny is the wrong word there, for I don't remember laughing much at the time.

So why is it that Scottish money is viable in England but Ulster currency is not? The Irish Sea is only about 30 miles across.
I often have to accept Scottish fivers at Farmers' markets just south of the border in Cumbria......mind you, I usually get rid of them in change for the next person who gives me a twenty for a ?1 bag of biscuits!

northern irish currency is legal tender just like any other form of currency. unfortunately a lot of people on the mainland are pretty ignorant and assume that "bank of ireland" "northern bank" etc. deal in different currencies to them. they are legally bound to accept your money though.

Indeedly!

Radiologists have found that humans can safely withstand a one-time exposure of 5 rems (A REM is the dosage of radiation that will cause a specific, measured amount of injury to human tissue). A lethal dose is 800 rems or more (people are exposed to about 16 rems during their lifetime).

Insect researchers have found that cockroaches can tolerate a much higher dose. The lethal dose for the American cockroach is 67,500 rems and for the German cockroach it is between 90,000 and 105,000 rems. In truth the amount of radiation that cockroaches can withstand is equivalent to that of a thermonuclear explosion.

So, show a little respect the next time your chasing one through the kitchen with a spray can in your hand!
