Tales of a Librarian by Tori Amos.
All down to Helen who sent me a fantastic Great Tape Swap (which currently plays constantly in the car).
One track Winter by Tori Amos grabbed me so much that when I found the album in a small indie record shop for a fiver it was a no-brainer.
They are watching me in the shop as i hover around a lot in there!!!
Well they're selling off old stock after a change of management and the bargains are there to be had.
Honest....DAM in Durham which used to be Concepts .............I'm NOT a shop lifter and playing music with lots of swear words isn't going to get rid of me :D

Yeah I agree, got their album the other day, only listened to it a few times. I can see why people would think they were similiar to the Arctic Monkeys, they seem to be really taking off so good on 'em!

Can't get the Tundra song from the Boosh out of my head! God i love that episode. And Noel's clothes in the episode- especially the ski suit and the bit coat with the pink furry collar and cuffs. Apparently Freddie Mercury wore that in one of his videos! And the hat he wears in that episode was Johnny Depps!:)

"I'm little Johnny Frostbite moving around, freezin you up, freezin you down like an icicle. Coming in your tent like the pink light, scissorbite, arctic death, infinite night......."

It won't stop going around and around in my head but i don't mind because as i sing it the video plays in my head and i love the song anyway!

it was on bbc one last week so you might be able to get it on the iPlayer. i thought it was a pretty good programme but the comments left on the bbc website seem to suggest that i was in the minority. then again most of the comments there were from pro-cocaine folks.

i was listening to that the other night...

i decided that 1994-1997 were much happier times so i put these ten albums on my phone...

1. radiohead - the bends
2. gomez - bring it on
3. eels - beautiful freak
4. pulp - different class
5. oasis - definitely maybe
6. blur - parklife
7. green day - dookie
8. ocean colour scene - b-sides, seasides and free rides
9. the verve - urban hymns
10. bon jovi - keep the faith

Good selection :)
I'm pretty sure I own every one of those albums.

^ On the last Iceland trip, the DF track was on one of the CDs I compiled and I think it was the biggest success of the whole time in the car. Mr Ford has now been heard on a minor road in the West Fjords.

I've just finished listening to the five DS tracks on the site player, actually. I'm about to put on a CD I just had arrive by The Delgados. I advise everyone to go to YouTube and key in DELGADOS NO DANGER and play the B&W promo video. It's a lovely song and a very fun video. It made me laugh, anyway.

Wow....Howlin' Wolf! He's one of those artists on my list to get hold of one of these days, along with John Lee Hooker - just two who formed the bones and blood of R&B.

Hmm well I dont know a whole lot about his work to be honest. I got into him when I found an old blues compilation C-90 that my dad owned and I played it over and over in college. I got "Howlin' Wolf- Chess Masters Series: Howlin; Wolf- His Best" off itunes. Having looked around the net it seems to be a good starting point for his music and its great- I love it! You can also buy it off Amazon if you dont like itunes.
As for John Lee Hooker, I've got "Too Much Boogie" and although I like it I prefer Wolf and Muddy Waters voices and styles...I love the sound of the old style recordings especially when HW's huge voice makes the mic clip, there's just something about it.... Hope that helps a little Jan :)

jan
01-05-2008, 8:22 pm
These guys were recording 50 years ago and were marginalised musically and politically in their own country. But their influence on the music of Beatles, Stones, Yardbirds, Who etc made their music far more popular here than in the US.
EVERYONE should be made aware of Howlin Wolf, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker etc and their contemporaries so they can understand the origins of the sounds of today.

I probably listen to Tom McRae more than any other band / singer that I like . His music just makes me feel so good .
When I was driving up to Splendour festival in Notts on Sunday I sorted out about 7 or 8 cds to listen to over the 3 - 4 hour return journey ...... While I do have some of the more recent albums, 'Gold' is still probably my all-time favorite. You know how sometimes you have a song or an album, or even a whole artist who is sort of the 'soundtrack' to your life for a short period because you're listening to it/them nonstop during that time? Ryan Adams' 'Gold' is that for me... November-December 2001, the first time I felt moderately ok and happy about something after 9/11. It still makes me feel, and it still makes me smile :)

I know what you mean - I have so many albums that mean something about a point in time, or a place or people.

For me though, I can't even remember when I bought that album. I would have said it was when I was at uni, but the date on the album means it was a couple of years after that. I don't even know how i'd heard of Ryan Adams - I think maybe the track 'New York, New York' was played on radio, but I'm not even sure of that. I know I always think of the album as being quite 'country', but I think I do have a country streak in me somewhere!

I love that album, which makes it more surprising that I haven't checked out any more recent stuff - I'll have to rectify that.....

Well, I went on Amazon, and they have a few Ryan Adams CDs for the bargain price of £2.98 each! So I have ordered a couple, and I'll let you know in a week or so's time. I did like the clips, but really you need to hear the whole thing.

I also discovered that one of the Marketplace sellers had a Don McGlashan CD that I've been trying to get hold of for ages, so I bought that as well :) :) :). Yay, lots of new music for me :)

I am currently listening to "New Adventures in HiFi" by REM. Not sure why, just decided I hadn't listened to it in ages. And I still absolutely love every note of it.

Have you ever been to NZ Sixmonthsin? You seem to be really into the Kiwi music.

Hi Ails - yes I've been lucky to go twice to NZ.

I'm a massive Crowded House/Neil Finn fan, so I guess I've just picked up on other artists. I saw Bic Runga in concert a couple of years ago - it was a tiny venue in Manchester and she was brilliant.

The first time I ever saw/heard of Duke Special was when he supported Crowded House in 07 - now I love the Duke and Crowded House equally. There's some brilliant kiwi and irish music out there isn't there. Have you been to NZ as well Ails?

I sure have I spent four months over there last year. I came home because as much as I loved NZ, I just got too homesick. I did do a three week bus tour before I came home though so I got to see most of the place. Such a stunning country. Even drove through Te Awamutu! :D

I've always been a Crowded House fan and I got really into Bic Runga when I was there, they are very proud of her so they are. I've not been lucky enough to see Crowded House live though so hopefully I'll get the chance soon. :)

You should also listen to Split Enz if you haven't already.

I'm currently enjoying Elbow's Seldom Seen Kid, Teddy Thompson's A piece of what you need and Bruce's Working on a Dream

That's just greedy!

I just love "One Day Like This". I find it completely uplifting and it puts a spring in my step and a tear in my eye when I listen to it on my walk home...

And Guy Garvey is just gorgeous!

Totally agreed with you about "One Day.........." It was an amazing experience wandering off from the Other Stage at Glastonbury last year, with the whole (huge) crowd still belting it out :-)
