Here's another highly recommended gig to go to at the Pigalle Club (shame the venue's not ideal). Takes place on 23rd February. There are 2 different ticket prices - cheaper standing in the aisles sort of thing, and more expensive sitting down at a table in front of the stage...
I'm not selling the venue very well, but Jack L is an incredible singer-songwriter and well worth checking out...
Here's the blurb from the Pigalle site:
JACK L
Friday 23rd February
"Where on earth does that voice come from?" is the natural reaction on hearing Jack L sing for the first time.
The literal answer is Athy, Co. Kildare in Ireland, where he grew up and worked an apprenticeship as a car mechanic, fine-tuning his voice as well as engines in the interesting acoustic of empty garages.
Driven by the need to broaden his musical horizons, Jack left the rural roads of Ireland behind for the comparative fast lanes of Germany's autobahns. There he bonded with a bunch of musicians during a drunken evening, and in the sober light of day they became Jack L and the Black Romantics.
Largely drawing on the work of Belgian writer and singer Jacques Brel, whose songs were newly renowned thanks to Scott Walker and Alex Harvey among others, Jack recorded his first album, ?Wax?. The critics were impressed, one remarking that his singing "is a mixture of all the great male singing voices of the 20th century". The comparisons started to be made. Names as diverse as Walker, Nick Cave, Jim Morrison, Frank Sinatra and Tom Waits were mentioned.
