Hi folks,
I have to play a gig on St Patrick's day, so we need to fill up 3 hours with fiddley-dee and music from Irish bands.
Please name me as many Irish bands of bands with Irish links as you can.
So far we have:
U2
The Corrs
Van Morrison
The Undertones
Snow Patrol
Christy Moore
Damien Rice
Waterboys
Thin Lizzy
Phil Coulter
Divine Comedy
And of course our Duke Special.
Any bands I'm missing out?
(Boyzone and Westlife excluded, in that order..)
Cheers,
Steve

I actually liked them, October Swimmer being their best song, followed by Snow. Not neither really suitable for St Patrick's day though!
Dukester, any song suggestions? What does Copenhagen have in store? :-)

Horslips
Now, just to clarify this...
Are you saying that Horslips are Irish music?
Because there are two people who browse this forum... one of them my other half, who laughed at me the day I said these guys played irish music!
The Legendary Moving Hearts.
Lucky enough to see them live first time in years on Friday night.
Mighty stuff indeed!
I second Flogging Molly too. I get to see them play live in my tiny local pub every Saturday night as they currently live in my village while rehearsing for their new album. True gentlemen, they even sweep the pub floor and wash glasses etc when they finish playing believe it or not.

I love Flogging Molly, "Drunken Lullibies" was the soundtrack to my new years eve about 5 years ago!

He put on a CD and said "You guys wanna hear some Irish music?" It wasn't a Horslips album, it was some "Electric Dreams" album or something. And yeah, Horslips were on the album, but the song he put on was NOT irish music. So nobody take his side on this, he's just trying to stop us bringing it up everytime we see him haha!

I never doubted that they were Irish, mainly because they were on an album of Irish bands...
Conor did say it was Irish music, and to me, Irish music is all fiddley dee fiddley doo. In my eyes, it doesn't qualify. Its def not traditional, not what I expect when i hear 'Irish' music. Listen to the song, I think a lot of people will agree with me!
I firmly believe that there's a damn site more to Irish music than fiddley dee.
I also believe that there are far too many Irish musicians who deserve the financial rewards which their talents merit. This situation is unlikely to improve while the majority of UK radio stations continue to feed the general public such dummed down dross.
I feel better for that , now back to the thread.

I love a lot of Flooging Molly's stuff, Drunken Lullabies and Seven Deadly sins especially, but no matter how I try DKM just do nothing for me. Too much punk and not enough irish, alas.

Arghh I hate missing threads when you have the lack of the internet!
I firmly agree with you there Graham...it doesn't at all. E.g. U2 is still classified as Irish music. Just because it's Irish doesn't mean it can't have different genres amoung those.
Conor just didn't get his point across before he put that cd on...therefore it was definately not something Jarv and I were waiting to hear. It's hard to explain..one of those...'you had to be there' type things.

Anyone else remember Power Of Dreams? I used to like them a lot (early 90's).

I loved Power of Dreams' "Where's The Love" when I was younger. It used to get the odd play on the wireless. A couple of years ago I managed to buy the Immigrants, Emigrants and Me album for the equivalent of about 80p in South Africa. It's class!

Ah, my copy got nicked in a burglary a few years ago, keep keeping an eye on ebay in case it shows up some time. Still got a tape of their second album 2 Hell With Common Sense, somewhere.
Saw them once at The Duchess in Leeds and bloody great it was too. :)

Great band, '100 Ways To Kill A Love' is still one of my favourites, I have their 'The Pleasure is Back' demo tape from 1988 somewhere including a handful of 12".
Can't believe I left them out of my list of Irish Bands....:?

the chalets are indeed irish. half of them occasionally play in the warlords of pez as well. there is only the one album and two or three singles so far as well as some obscure vinyl releases from 2001/2ish.

yeah they're irish my brother works with one of the girlies
I must insist on adding to this list one of the most underated and influential bands ever. That Petrol Emotion. (Old person alert) Long since split up now, they were the soundtrack to my youth.(Edits out gushy rambling nostalgic platitudes)
Now there is a band who have unfinished business.
Ciaran Mc Laughlin was such a fine songwriter (amongst great songwriters in the band) that its a shame he never followed up the bands demise with some solo recordings or at least wrote for other artists.
If anyone knows any different please let me know!!!
At least there is the reformed Undertones I suppose.

Good one Mac, TPE were a great band.
'Creeping to the cross'

Great band indeed and it's nice to come across a fellow fan.
Are you familiar with the band Marfa Lights? It was Steve Macks follow up project. They only released one album "Tensor" and then split up. I think its really good.
( I think there is another band going by the same name these days)
I'd be more than happy to make a copy if you're interested?

Very nice of you Mac cheers :)
I tried to save you the trouble by searching for a downloadable source but to no avail.
Yes by all accounts it seems to retain the TPE sound so I'd be most interested in hearing it.
I kinda lost track of the works of Mr Mack after TPE but I did follow a band that John O'Neil went on to form called 'Rare'. If you fancy a copy of their album in return just say the word
Bless...
