Duke Special - Freewheel

This is, rather undoubtedly, terrible. Allow me to explain why. Duke Special (otherwise known as Peter Wilson) exists in a space where criticism is difficult to apply. He seems very sincere and capable of writing a layered and lush song, and has an indefinable sense of likeability ? the kind that 16 year old girls, their slightly younger, easily persuaded boyfriends would relate to without their parents getting worried. 'He's singing about love, isn't he?' they'll coo. 'And aren't our children cute and in puppy love?'

No! They are not! That relationship won't last past the Dinner & Dance, and Duke Special certainly doesn't deserve to last beyond this single. 'Freewheel' is insipid, soulless, admittedly rather cleverly written swill. Every adolescent dreaming of a lifestyle of romanticised goth (pronounced 'ee-moh') bohemia will lap this dross up, sing along with its utterly empty, meaningless and hackneyed chorus and conform entirely to a fa?ade built upon obvious pandering to your audience. Though heralded as a genuine fresh choice above Coldplay and other purveyors of middle class divorcee white-walled flat music, Duke Special is about as alternative as Tesco.

Bit harsh that!

Well I suppose not everyone will feel the same as the majority!

Ah well, each to their own. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, even if they are wrong :)

Of course everyone is absolutely entitle to their own opinion and taste in music is certainly a very personal thing.

Having said that, in response to that reviewer quoted in the opening message here, we have a great wee word up here in Glasgow which delicately expresses my own opinion ... Eejit 8)

I read an online review the other day which said Duke Special is anything but original. I haven't laughed as much in ages.

Very harsh review, but if you were setting out to find something negative then that would be it. I heard Freewheel first on Other Voices and I still think none of the released versions come close to the impact it has when performed solo with piano. Too much going on in the single version, it sounds over-processed and loses the raw emotion. On the other hand, that makes it more radio-friendly, and no doubt that's a contributing factor to it being played on every daytime radio show I've listened to in the past 2 weeks.

I would invite the reviewer quoted above to review a live session and see if his opinion differs, but that's neither here nor there.
