I wish I could be there for one of the aftershows. The videos are fantastic. Still hoping!! Could you please ask him to play 'If I don't feel It' or Scars for me please. Anyone?

Can I request a cover please? Letter to Hermione is one of my favourite covers ever. Although I'm not sure I'll make it to one of the mini gigs :(, unless Duke can make a gig on Sat 28th November, as I'll be in London that weekend :)

Covers - Bell X1's " In every Sunflower" or " Beautiful Madness"........

Would love to hear (and see!) the Tango Tangle :D

Not surprisingly, I also love Ben's "Tango Tangle" - even more fun with audience participation to demonstrate "legs poking out at every angle" ? :o

"Low" - in the middle of the set probably with something bouncy afterwards

Covers - Magnetic Fields "I don't want to get over you" that he sang in his Belfast street performance before Dukebox (no foot-aching harmonium pedaling involved this time) :)

Re. covers.
I'd love to hear Lucky by Radiohead. It's beautiful. It's on Little Revolutions, but I have never heard him sing this live.
Or - Mastermind from the Divine Comedy. That was something special.

I just love Feet in the Sky - Duke played at the very first gig I went to (at the Charlotte, Leicester), and I think it was at that moment I fell completely in love with his music!

This is Really hard...as I love everything...

Mastermind (I love Duke's version of this)

No Cover Up ( the song which captured my Duke heart)

Mockingbird ( emotional)

John Lennon Love (currently playing on the Piano)

Closer (just magical)

Don't breathe (fun!)

But, really, after all that I just don't mind. ANYTHING Duke sings will be enjoyable.

Hey Dukester,
I'd love to hear 'Some things make my soul feel clean'. It's one of my favourites of yours and I've never had the pleasure of being present for a live performance. And/or 'Love is a series of scars'. I'll be there on the 16th ....... and the 17th hopefully, if I can .

Look forward to seeing you.

Great set of songs last night and enjoyed your videos thanks. Wish we'd been there. Hoping to make 23rd / 24th Oct. I would suggest adding "Love is a series of scars" to your list but can see it has already been suggested.

Many thanks,

I'd like to say a huge thanks for Eastbourne - I spoke to Duke after Friday's gig and asked if I might request it for the following night and he said that he'd been thinking of doing it at some point. I went home hopeful but prepared for it to happen on a night when I wasn't actually there but no, Saturday came and there it was, and mighty fine it was too.

I'll pop a couple of the many (200+) photos that I took on the board when I have a bit of time to sort and upload them!

I have already posted a few favourites but it would be nice if you could ask Peter to sing 'Series of Scars' especially for Alice and Runnerbean from NI. We have made it to a couple of shows, but, unfortunately, the aftershows hadn't started. Hopefully we will make it back before MC finishes.

If he does, could someone please video it for us. We would be very chuffed indeed. Thank you in anticipation.

I like "Your Vandal" as well mrs lolly but do remember what Duke said about "tricky chords" - he might need his music book.
As for "Series of Scars" for Alice and runnerbean I know that we could add Delly to this :) Definitely one for recording by at least two of us!

hi we have 24 requests so far which i will present to dukester on friday with the name of the boardies that have requested it. because of the large number of requests i have excluded the songs that duke has already played eg, john lennon, no cover up and eastbourne.

keep checking on the mother courage posts and with a bit of luck you may well see you song :D
Please check Mr Fizzys set lists and post a request for videos of any songs played that have not been posted. i am sure that one of the boardies will have it

i was a little bit nervous about passing the wish lish onto duke as i did not want to create any more work for him or try to tell him his job so to speak.

i need not have worried he was very gracious and pleased to accept it and indeed co-incidentally performed many of the songs tonight including cat fish, low, feet in the sky and applejack.
will be posting them on the mothercourage forum

I'm sure that he appreciates the feedback and a few ideas Leslie - as you say - he's played quite a few already. Every gig is so different and of such a high standard that I don't think any of us would complain if he can't play them all. :)

I'd love to hear Duke & the band play 'Sit Down, You're Rocking The Boat' - the showstopper from the musical 'Guys and Dolls.'

I regret to say I'm old enough to remember seeing the National Theatre's multi-award-winning 1985 Olivier Theatre production of this show, starring Bob Hoskins, Julia McKenzie, Julie Covington, Ian Charleson, Bill Paterson & Imelda Staunton, so there would be an element of symmetry (at least for me) if the Dukester played it...and I'd love to see Chip & Ben going bonkers during the climax to the song...

This thread makes me feel the way all the Irish gigs did............left out!!
Who'd live in County Durham? Well, me actually, but when I go to London for Mother Courage, I'll just be happy to be there, soaking it all up and, if there's an aftershow gig, it will be a wondeful bonus and I will have no expectations whatsoever. I've never followed any artist before and it's odd-ish at my age to be so involved. But I've been a fan of Duke Special for a few years now and applaud the man's energy and his faith in his music which I share in spadefuls. I would never take him for granted.
My Mother Courage experience will be a one-off and I will have the joy of some unclouded memories afterwards, not muddled up with anything else.
Suddenly I don't feel left out but privileged.

Don't feel left out - I'm originally from Teesside! The great thing about Duke is the positive vibe and the sheer fun of the gigs. I've never been anywhere were all the audience seem to know the words and sing along.

I agree Jan. Everyone's different of course, but for me it spoils the magic to go too often. I'm actually going to see Mother Courage twice, I went once with Dawn, and I'm going to go again with my sister as she wants to go when she is in England, if it wasn't for that I would have probably only gone once. Don't get me wrong, I'm constantly seeing setlists and thinking 'oh I wish I'd seen that', (particularly with The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down), but it will just make it all the more special when I do go to an aftershow gig. :)

At my age I don't have time to spare to miss any gigs if I can help it Morwenna! We don't have the commitments that we had when we were youthful like yourself and it's the highlight of every weekend for us.

i saw the first gig and missed the second, when i saw mr fizzys videos i realised how much i missed.
we are going to break our backs to go to every show we can because come december it will be over and i would kick myself if i regretted missing any of the so many magical moments duke and the boys have provided. we have made good friends with all of the boardies we have met, the band take time to talk to us all every night and i feel know us now and if that was not enough there has been so many musical highlights.

Thank you Mr Fizzy!! It's every bit as wonderful as I imagined it :).

It's clear to see on here that there are lots of people going to as many shows as they can, and having a fantastic time, and I hope I didn't offend any of those people with my comment. I thought I was agreeing with Jan (which maybe I wasn't!), that for me I need to go to fewer gigs to appreciate them - the best way I can describe that is I love pizza but couldn't eat it every night - not a great analogy, but hopefully explains my 'less is more' feeling. Obviously, for loads of people here 'more is more', and I hope you can continue to get to and enjoy as many gigs as you can :)

absolutely not no offence taken
but i feel having missed out on the earlier times with duke and having the chance to hear those songs live for the first time i would be a fool to miss out on the oportunity to hear songs like feet in the sky, dont breathe, eastbourne & john lennon in the flesh. And seeing foy vance was amazing too.
i am so lucky and feel for the people who don't have the opportunity we have now because they live far away

Personally I don't care if I offend anyone but that's the grumpy old woman speaking! Actually, I try not to offend but if offence is taken it's not my problem.
My Mother Courage etc experience will be a one-off and undiluted by anything before or after. I shall have the best fun possible for me and I will not place any blame for lack of fun onto any other person.

I think I good probably see the Duke every week for the rest of my life and not get bored. Each gig seems to be different. I've seen him with full orchestra, alone just with Chip, with full band in Dublin and smaller band in Derby, not forgetting MC. I don't believe in less is more. I'm greedy.

The Joe Jackson cover (brilliant) put me in mind of another greatly underestimated songwriter, the mostly-forgotten Clifford T Ward.
A Duke Special version of Home Thoughts from Abroad would probably make my YEAR perfect.
OR Don't dream it's over (Crowded House)
OR maybe Clifford's The Best is yet to come.
OR Before the World was Round
OR The TV news?

"Different for Girls" was outstanding and a cover I am happy to post with Stephen's idea in mind for promotion - I'll put it on YouTube as well.

I would imagine that the "death trilogy" of digging, flesh and blood dance and Henry Lee may be on the cards for Halloween, but we would especially love to hear "Monsters in the Dust" live ...

Any more suggestions for the last two giglets?

Totally agree with 'death trilogy' for Halloween, was thinking this myself only yesterday! I know the three mentioned by Mr Fizzy are Dukes 'death trilogy', saw him do this at Birmingham I think?
But being the last giglet saw it as Digging, Flesh & blood and ending with Last night I nearly died. Up beat and great for a grand finale!

I'd love to see Ben trying to play all the wind instrument parts on this! I can also imagine Chip going a bit bonkers on the percussion front... Great pop song with a very uplifting melody, IMHO - so come on Dukester, why don't you play it on Friday? (I am currently trying to rearrange my entire life to get to one of the two remaining giglets, btw, with Friday being my most likely option)

Actually, while I'm here, if anyone reading this has any sort of contact with the lovely Fiona Shaw, can you ask her to read out 'An Obstacle' by Charlotte Perkins Gilman?

I was climbing up a mountain-path
With many things to do,
Important business of my own,
And other people's too,
When I ran against a Prejudice
That quite cut off the view.

My work was such as could not wait,
My path quite clearly showed,
My strength and time were limited,
I carried quite a load;
And there that hulking Prejudice
Sat all across the road.

So I spoke to him politely,
For he was huge and high,
And begged that he would move a bit
And let me travel by.
He smiled, but as for moving! --
He didn't even try.

And then I reasoned quietly
With that colossal mule:
My time was short -- no other path --
The mountain winds were cool.
I argued like a Solomon;
He sat there like a fool.

Then I flew into a passion,
and I danced and howled and swore.
I pelted and belabored him
Till I was stiff and sore;
He got as mad as I did --
But he sat there as before.

And then I begged him on my knees;
I might be kneeling still
If so I hoped to move that mass
Of obdurate ill-will --
As well invite the monument
To vacate Bunker Hill!

So I sat before him helpess,
In an ecstasy of woe --
The mountain mists were rising fast,
The sun was sinking slow --
When a sudden inspiration came,
As sudden winds do blow.

I took my hat, I took my stick,
My load I settled fair,
I approached that awful incubus
With an absent-minded air --
And I walked directly through him,
As if he wasn't there!

(I am currently trying to rearrange my entire life to get to one of the two remaining giglets, btw, with Friday being my most likely option)

I'd forgotten just how hairy Roy Wood was back in the day! This would be a great fun song for the band and the giglets have been a remarkable showcase of range and versatility. Despite Duke's amazing talent in making terrific cover songs in his own style I still prefer the unique quality of his own music (and those of the band) more than any other.

Needless to say we'll be there for the last two giglets - do say hello if you can make it :)

I agree with you, Mr F - the cover versions posted here have been superb, but I also prefer Duke's original stuff.

Can't make either giglet this w/e, I'm afraid :hissyfit: :banghead:. I think we should start a campaign to get at least one more 'post-show show' following the November break...

Sorry that you're missing this weekend DS
I agree that we should campaign for the last two weekends of the play - I have some ideas but will check the best way to go about it this weekend...

:):)

As a big Crowded House and Duke fan, I would absolutely love to hear Don't dream its over by Duke - I think he would really do it justice and would love to hear his take on the song.

Indeed. Also perhaps Four Seasons In One Day?

Lovely song......and yes, he would! I keep going back to watch Neil Finn's solo on the concert for Linda (McCartney)

A very kind Neil fan off the Frenz Forum gave me Neil doing a gorgeous sort of stripped down version of Sexual Healing. If anyone wants it just let me know, you're all more than welcome!
I practically went weak at the knees when I heard it :)
Actually our Duke would make a damn good job of that song.

I'm not a huge fan of that song, but I'd love to hear Neil's version of it. I've sent you a PM.

Thanks to all for the suggestions. I hope we managed to cover some of them. It's been a while since I was last on here and it's been pretty intense so apologies if I didn't get to the song you were after..

Looking back over this thread, I reckon that every song is someone's favourite - you'd have to perform your entire back catalog and goodness knows how many covers!

There were over 100 songs over the ten giglets and very few repeats - if that didn't do it, how long a gig would it need?

Most of us like every song, even if we have a special favourite - my suggestion is to go to every Duke Special concert possible until your absolute favourite comes up! :)
