As you now have a loyal following of small duke fans, any chance of some more child friendly gig venues? girls already demanding to know when they can see you and the band perform again.

Maybe we should do like the football folk do - take the youngsters behind the scenes to meet the players and have pics etc - they absolutely love it. On the other hand this is rock and roll so maybe not ;)

(Oh and yes I have experience in organising these things - lol!!!!)

We don't have any wee ones anymore, but I agree with all of the above. The Jesuit method is a good way to build up a long-term fan base - "Show me the child, and I'll show you the Fan!" :)

I fully support this-not that I have any kids, but just 'cause it was so sweet seeing Sally's girls at Dukebox and how much they were enjoying it!
(particularly the singing of their version of Diggin An Early Grave :P)

I think we should reward the young ones for their fantastic taste in music at such a young age!

I don't have children, but I also agree - I certainly know a little one who would love to see Duke.

I think so too. So much nicer than hannah montana or the saturdays! Ergh. Good to introduce quality music early. They are desperate to come again bless them!! Mind you I feel quite bereft this weekend!!!
Am very pleased that the girls fav music is Duke, the killers and Jack Penate!!

I'm amazed how Tom and I influence the children's taste in music. Jamie (13) just loves The Divine Comedy. They both love Duke Special as well.
That may all change in the future. Although I just can't imagine them being into heavy metal or rap!

Great work Robi!! I'm sure when mine become horrible teenagers I will hate their music but at least they have a good foundation

Could do worse than take a leaf from my own Mum's book of wisdom. No longer here to give advice but she knew a thing or two.
The Beatles were the ultimate rebellion for teenagers of my era.......so old am I!
In 1963 they were booked to play at Newcastle City Hall and I HAD to go. Sadly, at 13 I was too young to be let loose on my own. My Mum took me to queue for tickets, took me to the gig, endured the wall of screaming that was all we heard of the Fab Four........no one can have any idea what that was like...trust me but you've seen the footage of Beatles gigs and just multiply that by 10!
I know, though, that she got something positive from the night. The main support actswere Gerry and the Pacemakers and a Texan singer called Roy Orbison.
The entire audience were spellbound during Orbison's set and rightly so. He was motionless and, you would imagine, emotionless, as he sang. But the electricity in that packed audience of teenage hormones was palpable. His voice and song lyrics touched everyone. The ovation was mind-blowing and he commanded several encores and a standing ovation.
I know Mum was moved by the performance and I will never forget the power of his performance that night and, in memory, my Mum's selfless giving of her time to take me there.
Mums are what they are! Always supporting their offspring no matter what and always finding a way!
xx

As a mum of one teenager and another soon to be teenager they definitely at first wanted to rebel and not like any of my music but Sam started to come round to Duke's music and then both of them having come to the gig on the 30th love it and want to see him again. They insist I always play his music in the car.

So yes my "little" ones are keen to see him again - not so little though as one of them is bigger than me!!

I've been asked by my brother-in-law to get a CD for my niece's 10th birthday present. Any suggestions? I have no idea what 10 year old girls like listening to, so if anyone has any recent experience of what would be suitable I would much appreciate it. (Preferably not Girls Aloud!). And books as well? I've confused myself by looking on Amazon - too much choice.

In my case it was the other way round ........ it was Michelle.13 who got me into Duke Special and, to a lesser extent, a number of other bands.

Her tastes would be fairly similar to mine and I can see a lot of my teenage self in her. That said, my musical influence was negligible until very recently mainly because I had become bored of the music scene and was very much stuck in a rut listening to the same stuff I had done for years.

However, as I said, Michelle started to develop her own tastes and has sort of dragged me along with her. Some of the stuff she listens to is utter keek though

There are loads of really great artists who have done kids albums. My favourite over the last year or two is probably "Colours Are Brighter" which features Snow Patrol, Belle and Sebastien, Franz Ferdinand and loads of others...

I think Claire and the Reasons made an album for children this year?

Back on topic:redface: I haven't a clue about CDs for teenagers. I'd just cop out and give them the cash!!!!
Books..........I'd encourage anyone over the age of 12 to read Terry Pratchett's latest Discworld novel 'Unseen Academicals'. It's about football...and then again...it isn't!!
Like Duke's music, Pratchett is so very accessible and completely addictive.

Thanks for the suggestions Robi and Sneaky. I found the Colours are Brighter on Amazon (no sign of C&the Reasons unfortunately) so will probably go with that. Very lazy - but it can be delivered without me struggling with the sellotape and I don't think the (very confusing) postal strike will be a problem. As for the book - if I haven't already given her Charlotte's Web (wonderful book!) that is what she will get.

("But that's what you gave me last year ...and the year before..")!!

I'm currently downloading a few tracks from Captain Obvious' blog www.thankscaptainobvious.net where this week he has really nice covers of the Sesame Street theme tune and Puff The Magic Dragon!

You don't know how lucky you all are. Neither my two boys nor my 14 year old daughter have ever shared my taste in music. I am considered very uncool. Even to the extent that Eloise refused to come to London to see Duke with me and hubby. She would rather spend the weekend with her 83 year old grandma. don't know where I went wrong?!
