Folks,
I was thinking about Duke's covers there, and Paul (flatmate) and I were thinking about what covers Duke has done, so I'm going to try to complile a list here of all the songs he's covered live in his gigs.
Task: Look through the list, of songs that follows, and if there's a song you've heard Duke play, and it's not listed here, add it! Name the song, and if you can, name the original artist.
My contribution is the following:
Shining Light (Ash)
Love Will Tear Us Apart (Joy division)
You Are My Sunshine (Jimmie Davis and Charles Mitchell)
Stumble And Fall (Razorlight)
Every You, Every Me (Placebo) (I think?!, Duke, Katy's Dalys, I'm right yeah?)
Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit (Duh!)
There are more, but it's late, and I'm tired :)
I'll create a new list and add the songs as they appear into the full list...
Steve.

Isn't the "pissing in the wind" song the one by Badly drawn boy, the video of which featured Joan Collins looking rough without her makeup in the bath?? Great song!!

Heard him play "Rebellion (lies)" by Arcade Fire the other week. It's a real treat!
Last time he played rOISIN dUBH IN played some Aimee Man song-can't remember the name
The Aimee Mann song was most likely Choice In The Matter, with the great line "....So row, row, row your boat gently down the stream. Hope you drown and never come back ...."

That's happy Andy!!! :smt085 Remind me not to hook up with you by the Liffy, Lagan or Thames, on a dark night after a Duke gig!!! :smt027
What can I say, I've a penchant for the melancholy!
I've seen him cover these in his own inimitable fashion:
Shake Rattle and Roll (Bill Haley?)
Can't Buy Me Love (Beatles)
Love Me Like You (Magic Numbers)
Summertime (Janis Joplin?)

Anyone got any of these to share?
I would LOVE to hear him doing Lovecats, it's one of my most favouritest songs

Me too Niall :)
He played 'Lovecats' during the sing-a-long in the Empire last year and I was stood right in front of piano screaming along at the top of my voice. Jackie Flavelle joined the Duke in the middle of the floor with his double bass and played the bassline note perfect.
Having been a Cure fan since 1985 I was pretty much overwhelmed by it all
Haven't heard it played since and am not aware of any recording, who knows Niall, we might hear it on Tuesday

Well I've only ever tried upright bass twice but I can play it well 'n good on a downright one - your post just made me pick up an acoustic and start plunking, cheers :D

Downright bass, lol!!
Doubt I could pull it off on an upright bass, as a guitarist my brain requires frets
But yeah on standard bass no problem
Get practising Niall!!

Played Tainted Love at the Spirit Store tonight....apparently it was "an experiment" so I'm guessing it was a first! Also an Elliot Smith number, but I can't remember the exact track due to excessive alcohol intake. Cracking good gig!

Hell, nobody needs frets, I played violin for years - double bass is a bit more of a stretch though!
And I know it's not really called that but it just sounds good - I blatantly nicked it from an album insert where somebody was credited with upright and downright bass mind 8)

Is an upright bass not just a giant's violin??

No classical training for me I'm afraid, despite being a self taught guitarist of nearly 17 years I could not master the violin when I gave it a shot a couple of years ago.
Respect

I got passed my grade 3 on the violin and then failed my grade 4 and was soon after thrown out of the music department and barred from setting foot back in because I gave it a bad name...
I'll show them yet!

All because you failed your grade 4, that's a bit bloody harsh :!:
C'mon Guinness tell the truth, the reason you we're barred was because you trashed the music room and smashed your violin over your music teacher's head wasn't head!?

Sian - not quite...
v_s - I started in P3 so I had an advantage there, but I never got committed to it and inevitably dossed about too much. Think I still have one knocking around, being the hoarder I am

Dust it off Niall and get back into it, it's a lovely instrument and not the easiest to master so don't lose that head start
How's that Lovecats bassline coming along :D
tainted love was covered by duke at the ulster hall with divine comedy frontman
Anyone got a recording of the 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' cover? After hearing Psycho Killer over the phone it got me in the mood to hear this. Songs from a mispent youth and all that ;)

he he totally Katie, a mispent youth tuning in to the finest music of that era, 27 years later and it's still being covered! ;)
I would love a copy of it too along with Lovecats
Meant to post to this ages ago... heard a great cover on RTE1 a few weeks back as part of an interview, it was of The Band's "The night they drove old dixie down"!! Brilliant ;)

If any one has a recording of his cover of 'Pissing In The Wind' I'd love to get a copy. In reference to a previous post, that song was definetly written Badly Drawn Boy.

I would love to hear Pearl Jam's "Crazy Mary" or the Beatles "When I'm 64".
I've always loved the 2 songs, but can't help wondering how they would sound Duke style - could be really fun
Also, Sufjan Steven's has the most amazing Christmas albums. How about Duke Special's Christmas carols???

Blimey are you sure about that!
Julie Feeney sang with the National Chamber Choir of Ireland which I assure you is staggeringly good. She is using a different style now - but just listen to the held note in 'Aching' ,that's not for mere mortals. If we're counting Christmas carol's.........

For me, the best time for hearing Duke covers was when he was playing around Belfast while still keeping Duke Special on the go, which I can imagine was incredibly hard to do.
Placebo, "Every You Every Me" was a highlight for me, with "So Cruel" by U2 was another.
This upcoming Irish tour is going to be something Special...
