This is my new thread dedicated to persuading the Duke to play "Regarding the Moonlight at Eastbourne" at the Glasgow gig. Feel free to post in support. I will probably post most days, doubtless to the annoyance of everyone else. Sorry about that. So...
Duke, "..Eastbourne" is my favourite of your songs. Please play it in Glasgow when you support Neil Hannon. Cheers!

Even though I'll be nowhere near the gig, I'd give it the thumbs up if I was... :)
Steve.

I first heard this song when the Duke supported Hal at King Tuts in September last year. Along with 'Scarlet" and "Freewheel" it really stuck out. As being good that is, not like a sore thumb or anything.
Duke, please play "Regarding the Moonlight at Eastbourne" at the Glasgow gig when you support Neil hannon. Thanks! xxxx
Steve, if I may be so bold, thanks for the support!

Steve, thanks again! And thanks Claire!
Here's where I start to get annoying.
Eastbourne is a seaside town on the South coast of England. I am from Paisley near Glasgow. In 1988 when I was fifteen I went on a trip to the South of France With The School. Two guys in my year got friendly with some English girls they met. Can't remember the girls' names but they came from Eastbourne. Anyway, they all did some of the stuff you're supposed to do at that age and promised to keep in touch. The two guys in my year went down to Eastbourne for a visit not too long afterwards. The relationships may have lasted but sadly one of the girls sent one of my classmates a postcard which recounted in graphic detail some of the things they'd got up to on the beach at Eastbourne and his Mum saw it and went apeshit at him.
Anyway, Pete, I love "Regarding the Moonlight at Eastbourne". Please play it at the Glasgow show in October.
No worries :)
How does your mum always find these kinda things?! Haha!!....the memories...

The first time I saw "Regarding the Moonlight at Eastbourne" performed the Duke was joined on stage by Temperance Society Chip Bailey and another bloke. The other bloke wore a hat and did the speaky bit in the middle of the song. On the subsequent occasions that I've seen the Duke live not only has he not played "Regarding the Moonlight at Eastbourne" but the other bloke with the hat hasn't been there.
Does anyone know the identity of the other bloke? His name etc.?
And is the playing of this song dependent on his being there...?

the outlaw serge archibald usually wears a hat...
occasionally there is another guy called johnny i think who sports a piece of headwear...
i don't ever remember seeing this song performed live so i've no idea if it's actually either of these guys!

When I saw him, the bloke with the hat was Ben Hales (i'm 92 percent sure)

Thank you, although we must thank Peter for it, really...it's one of my favorite lines...
And I'm only MOSTLY sure it was Ben, as it was my first exposure to Duke at all...but afterward I sussed it out via process of elimination. But the more I think on it, the less sure I am!
Perhaps Duke or someone else who was at the Dolan's gig in June can say..the hatted one was only on stage for a few songs...Chip was there, but the hatted guy helped out on some songs and sold merch. It just may have been The Outlaw Serge Archibald III or R?a Curran -- whoever it was, he was a very nice chap when I bought the merch from him.

if they were on the merch stall then it was 95% likely to be the outlaw!!!

Have to say I'm chuffed at everyone posting on this thread. Cheers!
If it helps, my memory of the chap in the hat was that he was quite tall and slim. He looked a bit like Nicholas Lyndhurst (!).
Duke, please play "Regarding the Moonlight at Eastbourne" in October when you support the Divne Comedy. Ta!

Sorry to butt in but I saw Duke in Dolan's and this mysterious 'man in hat' played the trumpet, did some backing vocals and handled the gramaphone bits-I think I saw on some sleeve notes that the trumpet player is called Rea Curran (as previously suggested) so maybe that is him??

To be honest after listening to all the answers being given in this topic.... and from my own personal experience...
I think it is The Outlaw Serge Archibald III due to the fact that he was the one who sold me the boxset at the door to the empire and he was the one who wound up the gramphone. I have never seen him play the trumpet though. Always thought he was more of a clarinet man on stage, but who knows.
I think the only people who can really answer this are the people involved who where at the Doran's gig.... Any takers?

I'm really showing my musical ignorance here-it was a clarinet-I'm just uneducated!! My most sincere apologies.....
