Unfortunately it's been assessed as swine flu and I'm now on the anti-viral medication.......
Most of the "conventional" flu symptoms are not too bad, but my throat feels like someone's taken a bread knife to it :(

Use it as an excuse to treat yourself ;)
My RNTBC: I have to face my mortal fear of needles tomorrow :hissyfit: I have all the symptoms of fatigue and the doctors want to rule out anything worse. I must mention that the last time I got my bloods taken I collapsed onto the ground in the local chemist. Not the nicest of all experiences, it must be said.
This evening I managed to organise a whole bowl of dog food to fall into the pan of freshly boiled spuds I intended to mash for the humans' tea....and all over the floor...and all down me:( Not good news for a vegetarian and I'm still sulking.........:getcoat:

That's life and it wasn't totally unexpected. What WAS the bummer was that it arrived in three seperate bills - one for tax (£412, the higher end of what I thought I'd get) and two for Working Tax Credit... one of them a supposed overpayment for the year 2005-6!!! I'll be sensible about it, though. I can pay back the normal tax through my work and I'll just cough up for the Working Tax Credit in one payment now. Let's face it, go a few years back and it's a benefit no one would've had anyway, so having to pay a lot of it back whilst still being entitled to free dental care on it is not the end of the world.
I'm a glass half-full person today, methinks.
Feeling lousy again today...apparently taking a long time to recover from swine flu...still....could be worse!
Doesn't help that blokes have been ringing me about a job which does not exist in terms of general application but I've created it in order to employ a family member. Rang our friend at JobCentre and was told it automatically had to be advertised but should have been removed from website immediately.....it wasn't.......bleah...bureaucrats!

They come in threes.
Today my wallet went missing (possibly stolen). £200 in cash, all my cards (including bank cards). Cancelled the cards and phoned the police and am now at my parents' place for a few days to try to get over it - they even had to pay for the train in advance from their end to get me over to them as I had nothing. This has possibly been the worst week of my life (short of deaths) and I take no shame in saying I've been in tears today.

GG, that's really awful. I'm sorry to hear of your run of bad luck. I know that it's no consolation but I'd like to buy you a drink at Dukebox (or at least in the Park Inn before or afterwards). Also, there's definitely no shame in crying, believe me, I know.

Wallet turned up posted through the letterbox of my bank, apparently with all the cards still there. However, £200 cash stolen. The police are going to check the town CCTV as it happened in a short space of time in a small area. It's a small victory, though. The bank cards being cancelled are the worst as I now have to go into all my internet payment things (eBay, Paypal, Amazon, AbeBooks, Ticketmaster etc) and change my card details when I get a new one through in a week's time.
Of course, the chances are that the person who put it through the letterbox is not the person that stole the money, but if they can be seen and then traced back, it might be possible to see where they found it and, from there, the person that put it down in the first place.
What's even more ironic is that much of the money in the wallet was withdrawn to pay the guy that's fixing my computer and when I went to give him an advance when he took it away on Friday, he said not to bother right then!
The only thing to make up for this is the rental of a huge bunny costume and an appearance, Flaming Lips style, during OLGDTT. Worth a thought, eh, Duke?

I'd like to offer this up for RWN's friend -the music is by Philip Stopford who is director of music at Belfast Cathedral.
His music is just sublime and I'm singing another of his pieces in the cathedral next week -I'll be thinking of her parents and friends as I do it -and of everyone else that has left us too soon.

Thank you so much Jacqui from all of us thinking of what might have been for those we have lost too soon. Somehow the right piece of music can say everything.

 My garden is a wilderness. Where is Jan when I need her...
:D Still here Robi! Just state your requirements:whistle:
xx
:( Where shall I begin - time, a small low maintenance garden (One border is 12 feet in depth...not width) ...or best of all a gardener (Shame County Durham is so far from Derbyshire)!!
The good news: I did the front garden yesterday
The bad news: 95% of the garden is in the back!
^^^
Sounds bad Robi:(
Have you inherited the problem or, like me, have done it properly at one time then just haven't had the time or energy to keep on top of it?
For a pro gardener, my garden is a disgrace but I've achieved my ambition to add height with trees!
There's still time to apply glyphosate (the only 'green' herbicide) to vegetation you don't want but it's a very final remedy.

If a compassionate God existed there's no way he'd let one person endure all of what my cousin has had to deal with in the last 5 years- leukemia(at 15), chemo for 3 years(didn't work), car accident in which he lost someone close, bone marrow transplant(currently dealing with), and now maybe swine flu also.I'm thinking when Anne Rice wrote Memnoch she got it quite right.....

It must be dreadful for you to watch your cousin's pain and a test for any faith you have. I guess you just have to decide how well you think he's coping and accepting his life. It's your role to fall in with him and be as normal as you can with him. If he thinks his suffering is causing you pain too, it may make him feel even worse. But when all else seems to be going to hell, Hope is always left and miracles DO happen.
Love to you

I am on my third different flu virus in roughly five weeks. This is infuriating - I just want to keep going, be busy, be useful... be well, basically! They're all subtly different but equally awful. This variant includes a chesty cough, head cold and shivery feeling... oh, and some residual earache and attendant dizziness from the last one, a fortnight ago. So frustrating! :(
That's horrid for you Ethereal. When you can't remember what it feels like to be fit and well. I hope the medics are helping. Build up your immune system with good food and echinacea. Use Tea Tree and Eucalyptus oils as both are powerful against viruses. Try to make lots of you time and let the chores wait. Above all, listen to plenty of good music:_
Hope you're feeling better soon.

It might be a placebo but I'm willing to try :)
He could then register as a spiritual healer :D

Whingeing again:( Not only woken by roadworks at 3.30am, including the strobing of orange lights on a lorry (completely unnecessary) and a powercut so wide awake and unable to make the soothing cup of tea I needed; but also now unable to bring my vehicle home as they now have our back lane blocked off and a set of traffic lights. Luckily, the garage people over the road let me leave it there for the duration. It pays to be nice to people sometimes! Van's probably now full of bugs from the bags of rubbish from this morning's work.....eek! I hate it when the spiders abseil down in front of your nose when you're driving along:hissyfit:

I'm just in constant pain with my foot which started to play up after it was put under so much strain over the last few weeks. My physio told me it was arthritis I'm on anti-arthritic meds and it's not taking the swelling down. I went to her last week with the exact same symptoms and she said it was just a sprain:confused:
Now she thinks it could be a stress fracture due to the pressure she was supposed to phone my G.P. today and call me back but did I get a phone call? No:mad:
I've been taking pain killers all day but nothing's working and I don't want another sleepless night because I can't take it:banghead:
That's not good enough is it? I'd guess you've had an x-ray? Feeling even worse for you since my GP just rang to make sure we were singing from the same hymn sheet over my little pink pills. The specialist increased the dose last week. We are so fortunate here to have brilliant medical care.

Sorry to hear about your pain FTF, I hope that you have a more comfortable night, somehow.Maybe you'll sleep from just being so exhausted.
My RNTBC...I got splashed in the eye with bleach at the hairdressers today having my hair done ready for MC tomorrow. They rang A & E for me and I was advised to bathe the eye often with water, which I was already doing. It feels sore tonight but I can see okay out of it.

I haven't even had a x-ray yet that's what the call was supposed to be about:mad:
A friend came over to rescue me after she phoned me up and I couldn't stop crying but it's all good now:)
In the space of a couple of hours yesterday afternoon we managed to lose the use of both our cars. We were out sorting out fancy dress for the 50th birthday party we went to last night (which was why I couldn't be at the last aftershow gig - another RNTBC!). Firstly someone left a note on Richard's car to say he had a flat tyre. Got that car home and changed over to mine. Popped into my parents to borrow some stuff for the costume. When we went to leave my car wouldn't start and was coming up with all sorts of weird messages. Called out the recovery. My dad took Richard and Jack home and they proceeded to try to change the tyre on the other car (it now being dark which made it even harder). They couldn't get the spare tyre off as whoever had it before us had fixed some sort of chain and padlock on it for which we don't have the key and therefore it wouldn't come off. Waited an hour for the recovery man who was very helpful and diagnosed a flat battery. He got it going for me to get home (all of a mile away!). Just need a new battery now.
Pumped up the tyre on the old car which appears to be a very slow puncture (although we wondered at one point if it was a Halloween prank) so at least we got to the party and it has only gone down a tiny bit this morning.
Probably a good job we weren't coming up to London as we wouldn't have risked driving on it for that distance.
It was so weird to have both cars out of action at the same time. Its never happened before and we have had both cars for quite a while.
^^^^
Cars actually KNOW when it's the worst possible time for them to go wrong! I had the car from hell for a while. It would stop its engine at traffic lights in the rush hour and refuse to start again.
xx
I think you are probably right Jan.
Well we are £250 lighter, and it took all day to sort out, but both cars back on the road, new battery for one and two new tyres for the other plus £10 tip for the man at the garage who managed to get the spare tyre free from what I understand was a cycle lock.
Then had the fun of re coding the radio. Had to work it out myself as the instructions in the manual bore no relation to what you actually had to do - at least I can have music tomorrow on the way to work!

RNTBC - Stupid customers! :hissyfit:
We're in the middle of a major project in work and its a mess.... the customer has decided that it needs to be completed by the beginning of December but they keep changing the requirements which means we really stand no chance!
Today one of them asked me for a realistic opinion - is it doable... so I told them... NO!
Of course, I was sitting with our sales director at the time who immediately told me to shut up and of course it was... the man hasn't a clue!!! :banghead:
He then went to my boss and complained so much so that my weeks holiday has just been cancelled on me "due to business requirements"... I'm not happy!
A counter-complaint from you on the basis of unprofessional conduct by the sales director? Is he losing his holiday? I hope he's planning on doing some sales direction in order to put his money where his mouth is.

:) Good luck! Just do your best - that's all you can do. I'm sure it will go well!
I had the HT, DH and an advisor, observing me all in the same lesson. (The advisor was judging the head, judging me! Moreover they turned up late - and I repeated everything for their benefit (Not clever). On top of that the workmen were making a right racket right outside my class, and I could hardly hear a thing the children were saying.
Having said that, the children were absolute stars in that lesson!

Really worried about my dog, Milo, a 12 and a half yr old border collie. I have been up with him all night as he is so unsettled. He has a couple of lumps and I am so cowardly about taking him to the vet as I feel I know what he will say and Milo is a very nervous dog around strangers. He is still eating, drinking, going out for his walk around the garden and doesn't show signs that he is in pain but he seems fretful tonight. It's difficult getting my head round this one, I can't face it.

RNTBC - Families!!!
Mine has fallen out big time and at the moment its not looking like something that will ever recover.
My Mum had a massive fight with my brother's wife. My brother naturally has taken his wife's side in the argument and they have vowed to cut all contact.
My sister tried to play go-between and now no one is speaking to her
And for the first time in my life I'm really scared... I scared that my family really will fall apart.
My Mum and brother are so alike and stubborn through and through. If they refuse to talk, we really will loose contact and that includes contact with my wee niece and nephew.
I want to bang their heads together and slap them all one, but I really just dont know what to do :hissyfit:

It puts mine into perspective (being hounded by eBay who are cancelling my listings for doing what I was told to do by eBay reps who apparently got their facts wrong - causing me DAYS of work I now have to do all over again, in spite of the fact that since they changed their rules on shipping, no one's buying anything anyway).
I don't think my lower dose of little pink pills is working. Gone all hyperactive again and no sleep at all since Tuesday night....back to the doc for advice I guess...and I was doing so well:( Sorry, it's pills for a hyperactive thyroid and it's a bugger getting it right. I WANT TO SLEEP:banghead:

My son dropped his £1.000 violin when horsing around with his friend and cracked it. It's going to cost the same amount of money to fix it.
On top of that, his teacher has just been on the phone to me, relaying all her frustrations with him - lack of organisation, poor technique, poor listening skills, lack of maturity etc, etc, lucky to have got a merit in his Grade 5. (I think I must have caught her in a very bad mood)!
Not a good start to the day - when I think of the 1,000s of pounds we have spent on lessons, orchestras, books, petrol etc!
Really fed up!
Ah, the joys of parenting:mad:
In contact via text with Gilly and her friend who are having the journey from hell on the bus from Durham. They're not even sure if there will be a connecting bus at Crook and my car's snowed in 8(
xx
Update: The bus out of Durham was so slow due to snow and vehicles blocking the road/wandering off into lampposts etc that some drunken guys got off to answer calls of nature and have a smoke, then got back on!! At Willington the driver had a call to say he couldn't go further as another bus had spun right round along the road, but he ignored it and made Crook to a round of applause! The girls had time to find chips and their connection was on time. It took them 3 and a half hours for a 15 mile journey but they're both home safely now.

^^^ Reading a "real live" experience makes me realise how lightly we've got off in London.
Even going a few miles north of the M25 to visit family was a bit of a shock ~ still fairly deep snow, and side roads like a skating rink.

I had to come home from qork 5 hours early today... I work in a shop and we had frozen pipes, therefore no water. I was standing at the door to the store today and said to Kelly (who I was working with) "Kelly, I can hear gushing water...where's that coming from if our water isn't working?" I went down to the kitchen to see that the pipes had unfrozen...someone had left the tap on in the kitchen when the pipes were frozen and the sink had now overflown, (with water flowing into the microwave and kettle) so I sprinted over to turn the tap off but didn't realise there was water on the floor, so slipped on that, twisted my ankle and hurt my wrist in the process :/

My mum got taken into hospital last Wednesday and isn't any better...
She's been sick since Christmas, but got steadily worse and the past 2 weeks, she was just lying on the sofa, unable to move so we finally got her to go to hospital last Wednesday. (she's terrified of hospitals) She wasn't eating or drinking. They've had 6 different surgeons down to see her, but none of them think it has anything to do with their area. I have been up to see her a few times but the last time I went up was Tuesday night and she was so much better...even managed to eat a banana sandwich while I was there, was off the drip etc, but then yesterday she was worse than ever...her potassium levels got dangerously low, so they put her back on the drip and put her on a heart monitor. If her potassium levels are high enough tomorrow, she's getting a bi-opsy and the camera thingi. (don't know the name...where they put a camera inside you)
They can't treat her for anything though until they find out what it is. I just keep telling myself she's in the best place for her at the minute, but it's so hard sitting at home worrying about her, going up to see your mum who's usually so strong completely helpless and seeing how much it's affecting everyone else.
It hasn't been just as bad this week because i've been off school on mid term, so could go up when I pleased, it didn't matter if I got little-to-no sleep over worrying etc, but i'm back to school on Monday, so hopefully i'll be ok :/
They've told her she'll probably be in there for at least a couple on weeks :(

@ xLaurax...best wishes to you and your mom! I know that not knowing what's going on makes it all more stressful. I'll keep a good thought for you!
Ditto. You're right, xlaurax. Your mum is in the right place. Hopefully they will find the cause soon, and get the right treatment in place for her for a good recovery.

Thanks guys...went up to see her today...still no change and she will probably be in there for a month or so yet. The only consolation is that she's happy enough and isn't getting stressed out about being in the hospital because the staff are being so brilliant, plus she's got her appetite back. As much as she tries to put on a brave face while we're there, it killed me watching her barely able to walk 2 metres to the toilet :/
She's being a typical mum though...not worrying about the fact that she's in hospital, in loads of pain, but instead worrying about the fact that she won't be there for me when I have my university interview on Wednesday and about the fact that it's my brother's 16th birthday on Thursday which she won't be home for!

Awk Jan, I'm really so sorry...I know how it felt when we lost my dog/cat/hamster, particularly when they've been with you for such a long time :/
Just wanting to apoloogise for my absence (have been staying in grannie's house with less internet access) and thank you all for your thoughts and well wishes with regards my mum...she's home! She's not really any better though, aside from that her appetite's back...she can still barely walk, is in loads of pain, vomiting etc, but they have ruled out surgery (thankfully!) so allowed her out for a bit to wait on results from tests, for them to figure out how to treat it and for them to try and work out what it is, because everyone's still none the wiser :/
It's so nice to have her home for a bit though and to see her even a bit better!
Really appreciate all your thoughts and well wishes! x

2 kids (aged 9 and 10) who go to the youth club I volunteer at had the bury their mum this week after she commited suicide by hanging herself at the local quarry :(
(they also have 2 older brothers agef 14 and 17)
Thanks for your thoughts folks. I'm sitting here with the niggling thought in my mind that i should put the rabbit to bed, ie, cover up his hutch against the cold. We gave him a burial spot next to his run where he spent many sunny days throwing his toys around and munching grass. It's true that they become part of the family with their simple needs and it never gets easier when they hand in their food bowls and depart over the Rainbow Bridge.
Laura, I've sent you a PM. That's indescribably tragic for those kids you know and i can't begin to suggest how to deal with it. To be brutally frank, I don't think you can. Life for some is hellish and there's nothing you can do to change it for them. Love is at home and that's where your love belongs now. It gets better......really it does. Hugs to you.

Oh Laura that's really terrible news about the children's mum. This happens much more often than people realise. I know of at least three other people who have done the same thing and it is always tragic.
Jan , so sorry to hear about bunny Kevin. It's always hard to lose a pet.
Sending my love out to everyone who is feeling sad at the moment.

Just went to balance my checkbook and found that due to a glaring oversight (my own stupid fault) I sent my account VERY short. Which sucks for many reasons, but it also means an end to my wishful planning on booking a flight over for a show next month. :(

Did something similar over my council tax and will have to make a rapid car trip on Monday to make sure I don't make a pig's ear out of it! Nice to have secondary bank accounts but not always convenient in rural areas:-(

Hey Laura - any update on your mom?
For the love of all things holy, it's going to be almost 90 degrees here today. What the heck happened to spring???? :hissyfit:
No good looking over here....thermal underwear and snow predicted but heavy rain showers the reality for most of the day and snow over higher ground. The day ended peacefully with rosy clouds and blue sky, but a lot of water was passed between dawn and dusk (I saw both!). Happily now, all is peaceful and dark.

Allergies.
Which are not helped by this (this is what spring looks like in Georgia. That's my normally black car covered in a generous dusting of pollen).

Oooooh! Painful and there's not a lot you can do. Grin and bear it or invest in a rubber ring? That's what happens us humans because we don't have a tail! The cheek of it. :-)
At least you're back to beautiful sunshine. Take care.

My RNTBC is that last week my washing machine started draining all over my kitchen floor. We thought it was the end of our washing machine so we ended up getting another (luckily from a family member so no expense, but soooo much trouble finding a way to transport it and install it). After almost a week without a washer my husband does a load of laundry, only to see that this washer drained on the floor as well. Turns out after all that difficulty, and after imposing on a friend to transport it and my dad to hook it up, it's a problem with the drain pipes in the wall and not the machine. Currently listening to the maintenance guy snake out the pipes.

My youngest son left Plymouth yesterday on his ship, not back until December, he'll be in waters off Somalia, Iran, Yemen and Pakistan. I had a tear in my eye as I watched the ship disappear around the headland.
I'll post something in RTBC to keep the balance!

My RNTBC is that I won't be taking my kids to the Dr Who prom at the Albert Hall in July...Proms tickets went on sale online at 8.00am yesterday..and guess what - everything we wanted to go to sold out! Some of us just can't sit patiently at a PC at that hour due to work, school run etc. And what's really galling is that tickets will probably turn up on Ebay at grossly inflated prices...grrrrr!:mad::mad::mad:

My youngest nephew, Benjamin, had a bone marrow transplant almost 5 years ago. He went for his checkup with his cancer doctor yesterday to make sure it's still grafted. The doctor wasn't super pleased with his platelet count. They want to check it again in 2 or 3 weeks.
Thankfully I don't think Benjamin's too freaked out about all this, he was young enough when his illness and transplant went on that I don't think he remembers it too well (he got sick a couple of months before his 3rd birthday). It's just the grown ups that are a little on edge about this all.
It's more of a reason to be anxious rather than a reason not to be cheerful. I had hoped he'd get his 5-year "all clear" results. I know that he will, we just have to wait a few more weeks for it. Till then it's nothing but good thoughts and lots of prayers.

RNTBC, I have too much going on. By wednesday I should have finished a book review, written an article, started an essay, written a story board, been to hospital in Edinburgh (eek!), written an article, done 2 maths tests, practiced on my guitar, earned some money towards the next Duke merch I'll be getting and on top of all that I have to function like a normal human being!! IT'S TOO MUCH!!
Phew...

My supervisor told me last night that my department will be cutting some people. Not firing them, luckily, but moving them from our current department (insurance agents that handle customer interaction mostly via the internet) to another (agents that handle the interaction via phone). Since "customer interaction" generally means "politely listen while someone talks to you as though you were something they found on the bottom of their shoe," this does not make me happy. I had that job for about 5 years before getting my current position and hated nearly every minute.
I have my fingers crossed that I am not one of the unlucky few. As it is we take phone calls a couple of hours a night when the phone department gets busy and even that couple of hours makes me want to smack my head into the keyboard. :(

Can't sleep cos I'm in agony...top edged a hook shot into my face yesterday afternoon at cricket (no, I wasn't wearing a helmet!), blood everywhere. Fell on my bat (I think) and dislocated my shoulder! 7 hours in hospital (2 hospitals tbh) A&E and I now have my shoulder re-set but in a sling (thankfully they gave me a sedative to put it back in!), and 12 stitches in my face! Happy days!
given I was finishing cricket early this year to donate my kidney...that's it for this year!

You are so so lucky DofH. We had for a few summers, a Indian Test Cricketer living with us (about 10 years ago). He came to play club cricket here when he was off season in India. He was playing in Lahore and experienced the same as you, last ball of the match, no helmet :( but the outcome was fatal, he was only in his thirties.
Please, please wear your helmet at all times. I hope you recover very soon and get back on the pitch.
Get well soon Paul.......you must!
I get the same feeling of dread whenever I see someone riding a horse with no safety helmet (and I don't mean the horse). I had a friend who was knocked off her horse by a vehicle onto a road. Unfortunately it was in the days before chin harness on your hat was deemed necessary, her hat came off, she suffered fatal head injuries.
Don't take chances folks.

Chuckle heads at my cell phone company told me today that to upgrade my phone (which I've been dying to do for months) I'll have to switch to a plan that will end up costing me an extra 30 bucks a month. Sadly, this means that I'll have to hang onto my current phone for at least a few more months. meh.
(but it's nice that my RNTBC is such a trivial thing. Most people have real problems, and I'm lucky not to be among that number right now.)
