There is a mention of this gig on another section of the site but not here. I felt the need to add some comment here-the place looks bare without Derry being mentioned, as if he never made it this far up North.
It was a Duke day for sure. In the afternoon was driving up the town with the car radio on and caugh the last few minutes of a Duke interview with Mark Patterson on BBC Radio Foyle. Great interview and a few songs on some old clapped out keyboard that was sitting in the studio.
Then i was walking through town, spotted a poster in HMV window saying duke would be performing there at 4.30-happy days. A crowd of around a 100 turned in for this, was amazing gig played about 7 songs i think-the whole shop was so still during his singing it was unreal. The duke hung around for a good hour afterwards meeting the fans.
The gig that night was awesome, bought three friends who had never heard of duke never mind seem him live-they have been totally converted. The atmosphere in the Nerve Centre was out of this world. I have seen loads of gigs there, by some big bands, but but none of them matched this gig for performance levels. Peters voice was pitch perfect.
Opening and closing the set with B-sides was a strange one, but it worked. I dont know many artists who would take such a gamble by not throwing out a heavy hitter at that start and the end.
It was amazing that everyone in the audience felt as if they were part of something. It was as if we all participated in the concert, we felt as if we were member of the group rather than paying customers.
At the end of the night, when peter came down into the crowd to perform John Lennon love Song-there is a line where he sings "i wanna be john lennon" and one of the crowd roared at him-"youre better than him Duke". That made us all laugh and brought a smile to the face of the Duke.
I cant wait to see him live again. I cant even mind the set list beacuase i was so involved in the gig from start to finish. so hopefully someone else can post it here.
Thanks for an amazing day and a wonderful gig.
