First post after my first Duke gig.

Waterfords Garter Lane last night was fantastic. From start to finish the crowd were just transfixed. I's a small place (150/160) and is a theatre style setting that suited the show - but man did I want to stand and sing along out loud.

Every track that was played seemed perfect to me.The ending where the band came to the front row to play some really low key gospel and protest songs was something that I would quite happily have stayed til this morning to hear.

Words are failing me now but I just wanted to say how great the night was.

Looking forward to many more Duke gigs.

Cheers

Gol

Welcome Gol :)
Great to hear that Duke and the band are going from strength to strength as the tour progresses....makes me wish I was going to another gig now.
He's brilliant isn't he?

Excellent to hear what you thought of Waterford, Gol!

I had the privilege of going to the Waterford and Dublin gigs and they were complete contrasts but both were amazing. The Waterford venue was lovely and a good one for Thomas Truax because the audience were so attentive and quiet. Sadly his "hornicator" didn't work on that first song but it was at full volume last night!

I was really excited to hear Duke's version of Tainted Love as it had been mentioned on the forum recently - that's such an excellent song. "I think I am losing you" was missing from the set list which is a shame but there are just too many quality songs to choose from now that I guess it has to get juggled around a bit.

The set list from Waterford was:
Closer to the start
Brixton leaves
Everybody wants a little something
Slip of a girl
Last night I nearly died
Wake up Scarlett
Baby Britain
Dont breathe
No cover up
Tainted love
Portrait
This could be my last day
Freewheel
Salvation tambourine
****
Drink to me only with thine eyes
I let you down
(then unplugged:)
Quiet revolutionaries
I saw the light

We were also extremely lucky to walk past the record shop in Waterford during the afternoon that had a sign up saying "Duke Special 4 pm" so were treated to just Duke and the keyboard, with probably about 20 people in the tiny shop. It was worth flying over from London for that alone! :D

Sounded excellent Helen and certainly well worth the trip from London!
"I think I am losing you" is a lovely song and it was the first song in the Ulster Hall but "Closer to the start" is a good stand in

Must agree with Sian, these smaller gig experiences are making me jealous too and I think I'm gonna have to make much more effort to get to some of them.

That intimiate in store performance must have been amazing :D

Much as I love "Closer to the Start", I thought that "I think I am losing you" was very powerful as a gig opener, especially with Duke standing on the stool and just singing. It was quite attention grabbing.

I'm pleased I caught the instore thing - I can't imagine there will be too many more of those. And that intimate setting just makes me awestruck at the quality and purity of his voice - I've seen so many bands and excellent singers over the years but Duke's voice is the most beautiful sound I've ever heard.

Oh definitely Helen, it was very humbling to see him stood on the stool with one foot on piano on the huge stage of the Ulster Hall. Hard to believe it's a b-side too, maybe that's the reason a lot of people didn't recognise it. Love the live acoustic guitar version of it, really suits the song. It's definitely one of my favourites and belongs on the next album along with 'Careless Heart' :)

True, not only is he a talented piano player and songwriter but he is also blessed with an outstanding and unique voice which just draws you into the spirit of the songs

Yeah I agree, he has the voice of an angel. It's really pure and without fault really. He just seems to sing effortlessly, like it comes naturally. :)
