Ha - just thought I would start the thread...

E-mail just come through for the May UK tour. Woo-hoo!

Can't do the Southampton gig as I work on Friday nights and can't get out of it as it's a public service I run by myself (sounds dodgy and isn't).

I have phoned up the various credit card lines and they've confirmed to me you can't pick and choose where you sit for the London gig, even if you do it through them. They say although it SAYS you are allocated the best seats, you actually aren't. It goes from the back of the stalls working forwards from seat 1 through to 25 or so. Rubbish system.

Consequently I'm constantly clicking and rejecting the tickets it offers me until I get nearer the front and in the middle.

Looking forward to this hugely! Good on ya, Pete.

I don't really understand about the stalls - I've never seen the Shepherds Bush Empire with seats downstairs. It has seats in the next 2 levels up but it's usually standing on the ground floor.... :? I was hoping I'd bought standing tickets but I'm not sure now!

ruairi

Indeed - I guess all these venues have the facility to install seats and they're using it here. They've concluded that most of Duke's fans are over 20 and consequently can't stand for long periods, obviously...

I prefer to say we've earnt the culture and dignity of being given seats.

I was having no joy with the usual outlet as given in the e-mail newsletter. It kept offering me the same seats at the end of a row no matter how many times I logged in, so I got fed up and went to Ticketmaster...

Far from what I was told on the phone by no less than TWO outlets, you can indeed choose your own seats and it's just as well I logged on when I did as 90% of the stalls seats had been sold! I managed to assign myself a couple of seats in the centre 7 rows back.

If you've not got them yet, I advise using Ticketmaster to book your Shepherds Bush seats as this is the only way you'll be able to choose where you sit.

I booked a couple of tickets on seetickets on Thursday afternoon cos I didn't want to wait! I checked my order and it says "unreserved stalls seats" but when I go into order tracker I've got row J - could have been worse....

Perhaps they'll sell so many tickets that they'll have to take the seats out downstairs. :)

I'm sure Bob Dylan's audience managed to stand up the last time I saw him play there...

I went for Level 1 tickets. I was therefore able to pick what row/seat I wanted (that were still available).

4 rows from front, just left of centre. :)

You might just find that Pete has written a song by that name - a lost gem - and will play it as a request.

"This slip of the pen has slipped right through
And now I don't know what to do
Get out the Tippex..."

My tickets say that I'm in row J too...I've never seen them have seats in the stalls at the Empire either...can't imagine why they decided to do it this time round...surely they'll get fewer people in with seating? It's not as if Duke Special aren't used to playing to audiences that are standing up...and we're not exactly a rough crowd...

Phew... back to me again. All the old posts are showing me as ruari, but it's not me. No no.

I dunno about the 'not a rough crowd' business!

Did you hear what a girl yelled to Pete from the audience at the ULU in February? "We like you".

I'm amazed he didn't storm off the stage in disgust...

There's always that rogue element in any audience...Perhaps that's why they came down into the audience for the last song...to put her in her place? ;)

Hello all. I'm sat next to !Linus in an internet caf? right next to tonight's venue. He's a cheeky Belgian.

Just been to the stage door and ran in to Pete. Poor guy must be exhausted! His lovely wife Heather was with him as well and though it's the first time we've met, she knew me - and even knew that !Linus was !Linus, which is more than HE does.

DJ78 is with Pete again tonight. Hoorah! Great guy and a novel act.

I've seen the backstage bumpf and Beth is due on from 8:15 to 8:45. Pete is playing from 9pm until 10:30 if you're wondering about arrival times and trains and the like.

I'll be getting photos and video clips again tonight but as I'm several rows back they won't be as good as usual.

Looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible later on, and hoping that the Dukester will be playing THIS COULD BE MY LAST DAY tonight.

Just got in from tonight's gig.

Best gig ever?

Standing ovations, whoops, cheers, singalongs and a great deal of banter between Pete and me (sorry if you were there - most of the shouting out was myself but actually, no, I don't apologise at all!)

Foy Vance was there for THIS COULD BE MY LAST DAY (yes, he played it!).

The sound mix was spot-on. A 90 minute set. Five of them on stage tonight (they were joined by The Poisoner) and the fab DJ78 began the set.

I got no less than seven mpegs (about 25 minutes of the gig) which will be going up tomorrow night. This includes most of CATFISH for those of you keen to hear it.

He started with an acoustic version of CLOSER TO THE START and it blew me away. It was beautiful.

Chip's mum and dad were in the audience in front of us (my mate Eddie said they looked like him and sure enough it was later announced they were there) and at one point Chip did a cheese grater masterclass with us like on the hidden track on his new CD.

It was such a happy, triumphant and sing-along gig tonight. My favourite. I just wish I had been closer to the front of the stage.

If any of you go to gigs at the venue I very strongly recommend popping over the road to the PANAMA COFFEE.NET caf?. It was brilliant. Great, friendly service, fantasic cheap food and half an hour free internet access with your meal and a sudden offer of a free piece of fruit as you leave (Jamie Oliver would be pleased).

Some weird guy was offering Chip some 'sweet weed' as he called it after the gig and I'm pleased to say Chip firmly refused it saying that none of them were into any of that stuff. It made such a nice change to hear that from a musician! Hope no one minds me mentioning this – I’m saying it as a positive thing.

I also met Pete's wife Heather earlier in the day and she was just as lovely as people say and she knew who I was before I'd even spoken to her!

Sitting down was only slightly limiting. I could freak out in the seat, just not as much as usual. Eddie's dancing was thus controlled but his 'singing' wasn't.

I got lots of photos too but they're all a bit crummy. I'll do what I can and post a link when they're done.

You guys who didn't go - you missed a classic. As I yelled to Pete near the end of the set, "You make us happy!"

Great gig last night.

Beth Rowley was beautiful really enjoyed her set, the crowd where quite loud when she started but then went silent once Beth opened her mouth.

This could be my last day with Foy Vance was so moving it had us in tears really stunning version of the song.

All in all a great night with good friends and the Duke as entertainment.

What a fab gig! It's so good to see him in a large venue at last, compared to 50 people crammed in above the Enterprise last year!

anyhooo, as said above, the gig was absolutely priceless, sound was spot on+amazing atmospere. (i've made a recording, for the first time using my ipod and belkin tune talk, i listened a bit to it, it seems to be cristal clear but verry silent, so i hope i can boost the volume somewhat)

She has a great voice and did some lovely songs... It's a shame that where I was sitting there were people who chose to talk all the way through her set... (It's one of my pet peeves - if people want to chat why don't they stay in the pub? It's quieter and cheaper.)

Best gig ever?

The sound mix was spot-on.

Oddly, and I judging by other comments I seem to be alone in this, but I thought the sound was a bit unbalanced... I couldn't quite put my finger on it but there were several times during the performance where the mix just didn't sound right... Perhaps it's where I was sitting over on the right?

In terms of performance, the band seemed a little muted compared to when I saw them at ULU... Again this might be my perception due to the size of the stage at Shepherd's Bush and the fact that we were all sitting down...

Still it was a great show and it was good to meet a few friends I hadn't seen since the last Duke Special gig...

I agree with you this gig did not have the intensity the ULU one had, I definitely think it is due to everyone being seated.

It was a fantastic gig in a very splendid venue - the sheer size of it, the huge stage and the lights were v. impressive and the performances were excellent. Duke's and Beth's vocals soared and sounded amazing in that space but, I know I'm a bit strange, but I actually preferred the Aldershot gig.... I think a lot of that is due to the fact that I don't like to be sat down unless I'm listening to something v. sedate!

It was a lovely solo version of Closer to the Start at the beginning of the set. Great to hear Catfish but then we missed out on Ain't Go No - we can't have everything! Beth's got a beautiful voice and her backing vocals on Ballad of a Broken Man and Careless Heart were lovely. And Foy Vance is a star - This Could Be My Last Day was v. emotional. It was quite a long set really, finishing off with John Lennon Love unplugged and a well-deserved standing ovation at the end.

Roll on Friday! Will have to treat myself to Chip's album then! :D

But my boyfriend is more important than a gig....

of course he is! You've got your priorities right! Mine quite often get muddled where Duke Special is concerned...

I meant to say an apology to anyone who was queuing to get in as Beth Rowley had just started whilst my mate was holding things up by having a "banana rant" at the security guard. He'd checked our bags and I was OK to go in with a huge nail file, big enough to stab someone with, as well as a recording device ;) but he wasn't allowed to take his bananas in!! hee! hee! We had to throw them in the bin but not before he'd let everyone in the queue know how he felt. Sorry! :(

I did indeed. A free one too.

If you were off centre then the sound could indeed be off too - Chip does not quietly play...

It was perfect where I was. Sitting was not really a problem for me. Both Eddie and I were in the groove where we sat and were bopping about almost as much as we would have been if standing (probably to the annoyance of the people behind us). For me, at any rate, it was the best one. A mile-wide grin throughout the set was the clincher, I think.

I didn't get a set list last night but from the recording I didn't make (ahem) which would be fine quality if I'd made it (cough cough) here's the set list :

INTRO : HENRY HALL AND THE BBC DANCE ORCHESTRA 'TEDDY BEARS PICNIC'
CLOSER TO THE START (ACOUSTIC)
BRIXTON LEAVES
EVERYBODY WANTS A LITTLE SOMETHING
BALLAD OF A BROKEN MAN (WITH BETH ROWLEY)
SLIP OF A GIRL
LOVE IS CONNECTION
SOME THINGS MAKE YOUR SOUL FEEL CLEAN (ACOUSTIC)
WAKE UP, SCARLETT
PORTRAIT
SALVATION TAMBOURINE
NO COVER UP
CATFISH (WITH BETH ROWLEY)
CARELESS HEART
LAST NIGHT I NEARLY DIED (BUT I WOKE UP JUST IN TIME)
---
CHIP BAILEY CHEESE GRATER MASTERCLASS
FREEWHEEL (ACOUSTIC)
THIS COULD BE MY LAST DAY (WITH FOY VANCE)
I LET YOU DOWN (LIKE A TONNE WEIGHT)
---
JOHN LENNON LOVE (ACOUSTIC)

The recording - which I didn't make - has caught me also singing along to THIS COULD BE MY LAST DAY in tune (about the same level so when it gets to the chorus there's three vocals!) and Eddie singing along to WAKE UP, SCARLETT not in tune. Not by a mile.

Hi Claire.

If I would have made one, I would indeed be and may well have done this for board members in the past of other gigs I didn't record - why else do you think they tolerate me?

However, I don't have a hub or anything like that so I would have to burn CDs (and not even on a PC) and post them. If I did that kind of thing.

The 25 minutes of mpegs are about to be uploaded to YouTube.

My photos from last night are on my FLIKR account here : http://www.flickr.com/photos/45717052@N00/

Was a fantastic gig, completely agree on This Could Be My Last Day being absolutely amazingly wonderfully brilliant! Tis a shame it was seated but we did our best to show appreciation. If it had been standing it would have been electric I reckons. Had a great time, doing it alllll again on Friday although fortunately not having to travel to London will be nice. Not that I don't like London it's just not as close as Exeter.

I managed to film Catfish and Salvation Tambourine but the sound quality on the latter is rather of the rubbish. I've put Catfish on the media thread and I'll stick Salvation Tambourine up too but you might need to forgive the sound!

Lovely, lovely, lovely show. Liked some of the differing arrangements (particularly the woodwind changes), and nice to have alternating setlists on the tour. Managed to seat-dance to a certain extent but need more practice.

Wish I could catch another date or two on the tour, or perhaps that's just being greedy. Enjoy those of you who still have dates to come!!

Fabulous gig!! I filmed 'John Lennon Love'- or James Garner, as may be the case! Just trying to put it online somehow.

Agreed on Lizzlie's photos, Helen. There's also someone on FLIKR called Mr Ush who gets masses of great Duke photos - does he post on here as well?

It was a pleasure to get the video clips.

This is my 100th post - I'm now a real Duke Specialist! Who-hoo!

didnt realise when I saw your flickr stream at first who you were on here! so many usernames, and no more than myself I never seem to use the same one on any site (flickr==click_click) ;)

As I yelled to Pete near the end of the set, "You make us happy!"

Surprised he didn't walk off in disgust...

FABulous gig.

Was amazing from middle of front row (though we did **** ourselves when chip launched himslef at us)

Am i the only old fogey who actually appreciated the fact that it was seated?

Glad you enjoyed the pics!

I enjoyed the nice relaxed seating arrangement- no rushing there to queue early, no trying to save a spot, and no aches and pains! Hoorah! Though we just had to stand up at the end!

Oooh, touch?! Ha ha haaaa!

I liked it sitting, RC. It restrained Eddie from doing too much dad dancing and wasn't an issue for me. I still wish I'd been in the front, though.

Katie - ah! Yes, I know you from FLIKR now. I changed my ID to Guildford Ghost shortly after I joined this board and I'd happily be known as that on this site but I don't think you can change your username here.

Chip's mum and dad were in the audience in front of us (my mate Eddie said they looked like him and sure enough it was later announced they were there)

Indeed Chips parents were in the audience, also along the same row were Chips 2 sisters (one being my mum), and one of chips brothers in law (my dad). Plus Chips youngest daughter, Vicki, was there!! and they all, apart from chips brother in law, look alot like him!
Pete dedicated Freewheel to Chips parents, unfortunatly Grandma didnt hear!! oh well!! But everyone clapped, which is nice!
Would be interested to know for those of you who were sat nearer the back, could you hear John Lennon love at the end?

Would be interested to know for those of you who were sat nearer the back, could you hear John Lennon love at the end?i was sitting on level 1, it came across pretty fine

i suppose its because the venue dates from ye olden times of yore when they had to perform without any nifty technical stuff

and here beholden ye all my one and only contribution to the pictures relevant to the evening

Typical, !Linus. Just typical. Technically, though, these are not your subject of choice as they are hidden.

Lou - my, we are in esteemed company! I thought the two other ladies to the right of Chip's parents were relatives too. Spy your heritage here :

Yeah, I remember some guy with a big camera coming over to them long before Beth Rowley came on, saying some stuff and then walking off again. I recall a bald bloke with a beard and glasses and I am almost certainly absolutely wrong. But I did see a guy with a camera talking to your mum and walking off again!

Great gig last night.

Beth Rowley was beautiful really enjoyed her set, the crowd where quite loud when she started but then went silent once Beth opened her mouth.

This could be my last day with Foy Vance was so moving it had us in tears really stunning version of the song.

All in all a great night with good friends and the Duke as entertainment.
i am just hearing Duke Especial for the Shepperds Bush time and how much I can say that I enjoyed this man and all of the members of the music. The youn lady who sing at beginning I can not forget and so I say how amased I am to here such a voice of the two people all in the same time. She I am sure will be a huged name in the short time to come. I wish everybudy a great day. adios

Somewhat belatedly (apologies I've been on a Tom McRae gigfest - 3 gigs, 3 cities, 3 days!) here are my photos from SBE.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/46571124@N00/sets/72157600343215966/

My camera doesn't like the low lighting very much and I seemed to end up with a lot of pics of Ivo - he had the best light!

and I've posted a few videos on the multimedia thread including the Chip Bailey Percussion Masterclass

I also have video of the Foy Vance collaboration - will upload soon

Just found this very favourable review. I'll even forgive the reviewer for misquoting the lyrics of "Everybody Wants a Little Something".
