Re: Accommodation near Vicar St.

IrishTourist.com Editor at 18:34:59 on 11 Feb 2007
The "Vicar Street" venue, situated on Thomas Street, is not far from Christchurch Cathedral.

It's about 10-20 mins walk from Temple Bar, depending on which end of Temple Bar you're in.

The Trinity Capital Hotel is probably 25 mins walk away.

The best place to stay to walk to Vicar St would be in the Temple Bar (http://www.dublintourist.com/directory/accommodation/hotels/city_centre/temple_bar/) or Christchurch (http://www.dublintourist.com/directory/accommodation/hotels/city_centre/christchurch/) areas.

Katie

Ticketmaster shows a 19:30 start time... ???

Any rough idea when I NEED to be there, cos I can only get a few hours off to leave early, might not make it on time if its too early. Whats the deal, one support act?

Claire
10-05-2007, 9:14 pm
Yep I think the Christchurch area would be the best area to stay in, might be one of the more pricey areas of Dub though.

As for getting there earlier Katie, I think it would be best advised to be honest. People generally show up there pretty early and judging by the gigs Ive been to there's always a queue inside the venue to get front row....Also the last Duke S. gig in Tripod was packed, we got in just as Thomas T. was coming out on stage and it filled up within seconds. Dublin Duke Special gigs are a bit mad ted....

Anyone know who the support will be?

Katie

dont know if you know dublin but vicar street is quite a walk from the bus station and the bus takes 3 hours sometimes a litlle longer depending on traffic but as far as im aware the 5 bus is an express bus so you wont be stopping in drogheda or dundalk. think i might get myself a ticket too and see if my other half will join me too hmm im gonna go ponder

Claire

Maybe Im just used to the walk but its not that far from Vicar St. Youre only gonna be down for the night so i'm assuming ye wont have a million bags....ladies?? ;) I normally go up through Temple Bar, turn right and head up past Dublin Castle and keep walking. A taxi would nearly take longer IMO but then as I said I'm well used to legging it around town, trying to get to some gig however I must state that Im almost always in converse though.....no heels for those kinda nights!!

Cecilwinthorpe :) (it feels a bit wierd calling you that now) Hows you?

Vicar street.... I remember walking around Dublin with Claire after the Sugar Club for like 3 hours trying to find a hostel and no one would have us.

Kept remembering back to a hostel I stayed at near Vicar St and asked a couple of people were "Vicar Street" was... not telling you a word of a lie, they sent us to the accual street which was MILES away from the venue!

But it was all ok, found a room at the inn in the end!

Still have to sort out accommodation, I fear I may have left it a wee bit too long. Anyone any suggestions?

Yeah im doin good claire thanks. Im just debating whether to go or not which is really tough cos i really really want to go but i also know that i should really be saving my money for the wedding and a house although maybe if i convince andy to come with me then i wont feel as bad hmm that sounds like a plan

Oh yes Cecilwinthorpe I meant to ask you- is the engagement a new development?? If it is CONGRATS!! I'm delighted for you :) If its not then bebo is messing me around and I blame ithe confusion entirely on it :)

Zeyneb, how you doing on the accommadation front? I had a quick look around the temple bar area myself and its all booked up for the week. Im not sure if its just cos TB is such a touristy area or if its to do with the DMB gig on the wednesday??

Crap Katie, I haaaate the irish transport system!! Id say that alone causes me more stress than anything else EVER! Especially Dublin Bus!! Could you pull a sickie or is that a huge no-no? I know you said you just started there n' all but....?!

Finally, Cecilwinthorpe please do come! Its not gonna be hugely expensive-dont drink even and you'd be surprised how much you save?? Sure I'll get ye a drink or two to celebrate the engagement ;)

I might be taking the nitelink to one of two rather opposite directions, I have a friend from my unidays in Maynooth somewhere in Kildare, might end up there, or might end up taking the Nitelink in the direction of Ashbourne, to stay with acquaintances.

Are you going by yourself? Maybe we can share something somewhere, I like the comfortable idea of knowing you actually *have* a bed.

allsorts: hostelworld.com, eurocheapo.com, the big ones (barnacles, abbey court,...)
Usually I stay at a place called the Townhouse, with which I've always been very pleased, but now they demand a 2-night booking in the weekends, and I'm heading back on saturday.
Thing is, if I search for a stay, saturday is all booked out, so even if I did want to book both nights, I couldn't.
So the logic of Dublin greediness these days is 'ooh we'd rather leave a room empty than giving it for one night'.
argh!

Guinness
19-05-2007, 7:22 pm
Barnacles is a great place to stop off, but I can hardly ever get a room in it.

It's always booked out, probably due to the whole Temple Bar situated accommodation... Take two steps out of hostel into bar, endulge in 12 freshly pulled pints of the black gold, stagger two steps back to hostel and then continue to spend 10 minutes trying to work out how to use the damn card thing that opens your door!

:D

The gig, wow! Theres just so much to say! My personal highlights were, 'Psycho Killer' - fantastic! Also the duet for 'No Cover Up' just made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. I love that! The girl who was deuting with him (sorry for being ignorant but I can't remember her name) was great.... Even Duke seemed to think so....''I am broken and I stand amazed''

The crowd were brilliant, singing along getting into the swing of things, but as soon as Duke started to play 'Careless Heart' this amazing silence just came over Vicar St and everyone just listened so intently to such a beautiful song.

Was great to meet more people off the forum aswell, Ro = just lovely!

Bytheway - Sian I am alive! haha...I just lost my phone on the bus on the way back from Dublin. So I had no way of contacting ya! And we made it to the bus station all by ourselves...aren't you proud ;)

Sounds like an excellent evening was had there Claire, the girl dueting with Duke was more than likely Beth Rowley?

'Careless Heart', I'm feeling that silence Claire....;)

I don't think it was Beth, Kieran although she did come out and sing a few backing tracks for some of the songs. *I wonder*

So last night's Vicar street gig, again wow. (and I'm going to keep using this word everytime I report on a Duke gig so y'all had better get used to it!)

Duke and his special team never fail to deliver an unforgettable and magical performance. Highlights for me include (in no order of setlist whatsoever) "Psycho Killer", hello its the Noonan! Esp. loved the chicken tonight like dance for that one. "Careless heart" like everyone said, you could hear a pin drop during that performance. "Slip of a girl" was lovely as usual. There was a noted hush from the audience when Peter began that playing "Cover Up" too, one of my all time favourites and the song that got me into the Dukes music in the first place.

Who was that amazing lady singer he had accompanying him during "No Cover Up"? I think her name was Beth? She had a gospel choir like voice that just carried, really, really beautiful. Peter was very impressed too as people have already said here "and I stand amazed". Very clever twist in lyrics there P. Other special moments (oh thats cheesey) include "Brixton Leaves", "Freewheel" "Salvation Tambourine" and the good old Chip doing his thing in "I Let You Down" and the little hit of the symbol just in the nick of time after he "fell" leaped of stage and had to dash over to keep in time with the music. Classic, what a legend.

Actually all the songs were great last night, "Salvation Tambourine was a teenie bit better at the Tripod but I'm not complaining, it would take alot to live up to that gig last March, was a smaller more intimate venue etc. There was gorgeous mysterious new/old? song Peter performed towards the end last night that was just amazing, it gave me goosebumps. Now I can't remember the name, but it was something like "Where have all the lovers gone?" the lyrics went like that, so if someone could inform me on the title, that would be great. Twas quite noisy where I was located!

Last but not least, on to meeting the wonderful boardies, was so lovely to meet you Ms Guinness and Aunty Guinness, you are both as kooky as me! That's a good thing. Lovely, lovely people, we have to meet up for gigs/drinks again in the near future. Claire my dearie you have my number now anyways, I forgot to take yours! I saw the wonderful Sian, Jen and Bl? again too, twas like a Bellies reunion! It helped that Paul N his mighty self was there last night too! Overall a really wonderful night, only wished it could have last longer, the only bad thing was a dodgy vodka that had me in just about bearable pain during a few moments of the night, but you leaving a gig like that was not an option for me, you have to grin and bear it! ;)

Lastnight was my first Duke gig and I am still on a high......it was absolutely phenomenal. The hush for Careless Heart was spine-tingling and Psycho Killer was deadly :o . Cannot wait for his next Belfast gig. I will be there with bells on!

The girl who dueted with him on No Cover Up was one of Beth's backing singers, called Veria, Varia or something beginning with V anyhow and it was immense.

The crowd were great and really added to my enjoyment of the whole thing.

Mr Guinness, was lovely hanging with your family last night. :) Hehe, your Aunty rules the school. So much so that I demand she has to come to every Duke S. gig I'm going to now. Sadly I have no clips even photo's from the gig this time, my bro probably has some so I'll get him to put them up soon!

Emm, it was one of Beth's backing vocalists. I loved loved loved that particular bit, as it proves the versatility of Duke's music, from an indie bloke-and-piano song to an amazingly soulful rendition, it was brilliant.

Thumbs up for Beth Rowley too, what an amazing voice indeed, not really fit for backing though, as it's too powerful.

No problemo hun :) Would hav been so much better if you were there in person though....

Claire Guinness (and auntie guinness)...man I was looking out for you and Sian and Blath all night but didnt see ye! Then at the end of the gig Maur and I were just walking off (having bought the superb Chip album!!) when I saw you standing at the merch table...We were a bit its her/its not but when I was just about to head upto you and say hi you walked past and disappeared after that-argh!! Im kicking myself now!

And Zeyneb, I'm sorry for texting you so late. We were late getting to the venue so it was a case of legging it in. How long are you staying in Portlaoise for?

Cecilwinthorpe- it was so lovely to meet you and the good sir last night! It was cute to see the two guys getting on so well and 'talking engines and motorbikes grrr!' :) I woke up this morning and was like-why on earth did we go to Dorans?! Still that pizza was probably the best idea I've ever come up with haha. Looking forward to meeting up again soon :)

As for the gig!!! It was fantastic, as always! Dukes voice was in flying form and I was really pleased that people gave the quieter songs the respect they deserve.
Careless Heart really hit me last night-beautiful beautiful song. Its probably my new favourite actually.
Cant wait to see him live again!! Yaaaay :)

Ta for that cateym, nice to put a name to such a talented singer. I think she should join the Duke S. team as a permanent member. :) Now to solve more mystery from last night, any ideas on the title of that new gorgeous song towards the end "Where are all the lovers gone" song? Anyone?

Aunty Guinness let the Belfast/Dublin parties begin... :D

I am just home...Claire SO glad you're okay, tried ringing and I freaked the hell out of myself and started the 'eek,I shouldnt have left them on their own' business.

Okay...this is gna be a rushed one cos I'm late for going out but I need to post before I forget! lol. Last night, I have to say was awesome. I don't use that word lightly. I am so glad that this was the way I chose to celebate my final exam ever!! I lost Claire and Aine as soon as we got in :( but I had a drunk (and VERY excited) Bl?th with me and the lovely Jen some of you met at UH...

I didn't think anything could rival Ulster Hall, I was wrong. The atmosphere was unreal and the sound quality of the venue was unbelievable. Amazing to hear 'Don't breathe' and 'Slip of a girl'. AND THE NOOOONAN!!! (nearly fainted!)

Careless heart...for those who know me, know that this song is very special ('cuse the pun) to me. I have heard it twice live so far, in the Rotterdam and at the Oh Yeah day but last night I can quite honestly say it took my breath away last night. As soon as Peter said 'This is a new song...' I got my phone out. I started to record it as a video. Then Beth started singing. I had to stop recording...Sian lost all control over her tear ducts. The silence was phenomenal. Literally could hear an empty plastic cup drop to the floor. I have never heard a voice combine with Peter's in such a way as Beth's. It was almost haunting.

No cover up with Beth's backing singer was so different, she had a unique voice and she made her verse her own. She was incredibly talented. It was beautiful and perfect and emotional! (Thank you for the huggles Bl?th).

I have to say though, part of it didn't feel the same...cos I lost Claire, Conor wasn't there and neither was Scotty or the usual suspects. I'm used to my wee Duke 'crew'. Ghey as that is. Especially as I have never seen Duke sans the bandit! There were a couple of times when I missed you guys. But don't get me wrong, Miss Jen, Miss Lilly and Miss Bl?th were great gig buddies :D Shame not to see Claire and Katie et al, bummer. Sorry for not replying to people's texts but my roaming was being VERY annoying! :(

But yeah...what a night. Thank you Peter!! :D:D

It seems she does backing singing for others as well she's off with Basement Jaxx in a while. I stumbled upon her myspace coz she had left a comment at bottom of Dukes myspace about the duet last night. Check it out. She was chuffed he asked her on to sing.

and presuming the Fri gig wasnt too different from the other nights then it was Beth duetting on all those songs!

The audience certainly liked her in Galway. But those are stories for another day lol

Lovely to meet everyone who I met - some for the first time, some old faces too :)

Amazing gig, wish I didn't have to rush off in the end but it was incredible. Think Vicar St really suits him!
