Went to this last night, and while it was great to see Duke Special in Cork again, it was a bit of a let down compared to the gigs a few weeks ago. Nothing to do with the performance of course, it was top notch as usual, but the sound in the venue was pretty awful, the crowd were noisy and drunk and the non-stop talking/shouting made it hard to appreciate the quieter songs. The event was 'invite only,' so most of the crowd had won tickets in various competitions in recent weeks. A friend of mine remarked that "we must be the oldest people here" and it certainly looked like that. So a crowd of young'uns -- many of whom were only there cos it was free -- were there since 7.30pm or 8pm and were after a fair few Murphys by the time Duke Special came on stage, so the noise and 'liveliness' of the audience wasn't a huge surprise.
Peter (and Wayne Rooney on trumpet/accordian) put on a great show considering the circumstances though, and he had some kind words and advice for the two competing bands who played support on the night, Ilya K and Philtre. Of those bands, I enjoyed Philtre's music more, but I wouldn't be a huge fan of the heavy type of music Ilya K were belting out. The sound didn't help either, but fair play to the two bands for getting this far and best of luck to them.
A friend took a few photos so I'll throw a link up here when he has them online.
Anyone else there last night?

The fact that people are young should make no difference to a gig.
The fact that they were drunk inside the venue tells me that they are old enough to drink which certainly puts the responsibility on them to have respect for others listening to the show.
But yes the photos sound great, can't wait to see them!

Hey i was at the gig last nyt! I'm only 19 and found it to be good gig although there were a lot of drunk people around which did take from the gig as they were very distractin! There was one girl who was quite drunk standin in front of me screaming the whole time and at one point started cryin, waving her hands around so noone around her could see! There were a lot of young people there and a lot of drunks but its very unfair to just blame them!!!
Got real good photos though!

I really should let Sian answer this. :)
The short answer is no Conor, you don't drink responsibly, you can however hold your sauce so it balances out quite well....

Siano... Verdict?
To be honest, I'd be kind of pissed off if there wasn't the Opera House gig coming up, but as it stands, the Brog gig acted as a perfect taster for it and I can't wait to see Duke amongst a quieter, more respectful crowd...
I just hate being part of rowdy crowds coz when you look around, there are SO many people who genuinely also just want to listen but of course the artist on stage must only hear the rudeness...
Duke Special has a very rare thing though, which I only really saw previously with Antony and The Johnsons at Electric Picnic in the summer, of drawing you in so much that you can forget about spa-people around you... I was near the back at Antony, amidst screaming drunks, and still I just got totally lost in the gig, which is quite a talent... For much of Duke Special, I felt the same... Bring on May!

I assume that's me Mike, unless you found yourself another friend?? :)
Got the pictures up today. Only took a few because we were stopped photographing fairly quickly. Wasn't too bothered because the lighting in the brog is terrible

I did Donal, but the relationship was short lived ;)
Good photos, fair play!
