Wegottickets have Duke Special listed as playing on Thursday May 10th in Aldershot at the West End Centre.

They are selling tickets for it though I can't find it on the West End Centre's website and it's not listed on the Tour Dates section at the moment!

Here's the link if anyone wants to check it out: http://www.wegottickets.com/event/17830

You're kidding me?!

Aldershot's just round the corner from me - in fact, in my younger days two of the bands I was in played gigs at the WEC!

I've phoned them and left a message on their answerphone and will post as soon as I know anything.

If it is happening, the WEC is a small and intimate venue, probably able to hold about 200 maximum. I saw the Happy Mondays play there - there was only 70 of us in the audience! When I was at school I used to help with the front of house and ended up meeting all sorts of indie bands.

Any mod know about this?

If tickets are up it is most likely going ahead...

Ring the venue to confirm your curiosity...

ALDERSHOT GIG CONFIRMED!

The West End Centre phoned me back and tickets are indeed now on sale. There have been server issues with the Centre's own website so they aren't on-line yet, but you can get tickets as of tomorrow (Tuesday) morning direct from the venue.

Can't believe this! How jammy is it?!

Aldershot is literally 10 minutes drive on the road that almost passes where I live. Naturally, I will be getting jpegs, mpegs and probably a clandestine recording and I daresay, given my knowledge of the venue, Pete and Chip will be freely available for chatting and the like.

Pleased, pleased, pleased.

So who's coming then? Let me know. I'll meet you on home turf.

TUESDAY MORNING...

Tickets are purchased. You can phone the Box Office and pay by credit card; just 50p charge and you can either collect them on the night (no queue issues; it's a small venue) or they can post them. Call them on 01252-330040.

Anyone coming down from London, you get the Farnham or Alton train from Waterloo. The WEC is about ten minutes walk from Aldershot station and I can give anyone directions who needs them.

May is going to be a terrific gig month me finks

Grr... working during the Southampton gig. Pants to you, Amy!

Still, I'm sure Aldershot will be just Duke and Chip and I've not seen them play as a two-piece before so that'll be fun. I'm going to be right down the front again. I'm such a sad case.

I was lucky enough to see Duke at ULU in February - it was a truly fabulous and memorable night. I was planning to go to ShepBush to see him on tour, but one of the friends I was trying to drag along found the Aldershot gig before it made it to either DS or the WEC website and so I'm now the proud owner of 20 tickets and will be dragging 19 friends along - all of whom have heard his music and my enthusiasm for his live performances.

It'll be a fabulous night !

Will he come down into the audience at the end and sing something in the round ?

I've got myself a ticket! I'm selfishly hoping the gig will finish by 10.45pm at the latest, otherwise I won't be able to get all the way home (well, actually I could but it will involve night buses from Waterloo and getting in at 3 am)!!

Might be OK as box office reckons Beth Rowley is on at 8 - 8.30, then Duke about 9ish for 90 minutes.

Camberley, eh, Jack? You're even nearer than Guildford-y me!!! Jammy so-and-so.

I'm guessing it'll just be Pete and Chip at Aldershot (you probably know the venue so can appreciate that). I dunno if that influences coming into the audience or not. I'd be very surprised if we don't see them mooching about the WEC at some point, though. Having once played there myself I can tell you the backstage area is tiny.

My avatar is me so if you recognise me then come up and do the cello part at the start of WAKE UP SCARLETT at me.

I went to see the venue yesterday to collect my tickets (all 21 of them - thank you Barney for the free extra one!). It's a truly cosy venue !

As they're playing in Europe the night before and in Southampton the night after I don't know what the line-up would be ... they obviously don't need it as a rehearsal, but I'm hoping for a full line up.

Look forward to meeting you on Thursday! I'll post a picture in case I'm more recognisable than you - which seems unlikely !!

If you're dressed as you are in your avatar, I think I'll notice you...

I'll be with my best mate who looks a bit like Roger Waters' and Peter Duncan's lovechild. Undoubtedly I'll be in the middle of the front row. I'd call it a mosh pit but at Aldershot it will be more of a mosh mug. I'm quite a nice person. Just don't expect me to be so nice if you're very, very drunk.

JackTheCad
04-05-2007, 9:44 pm
no, I think I'll dress up on the night ....

Your friend looks like Roger Waters' and Peter Duncan's lovechild ? You mean their lovechild has a doppleganger ? What are the genetic odd against that ?

I mosh to PUSA and Fountains of Wayne, but I really don't think I'll be moshing, mug or pit, to any Duke material, unless he covers (Smells Like) Teen Spirit, which also seems unlikely.

Hi Amy

That's very sweet of you, thank you! I'm sure it will be OK and if needs be, I'll have to drag myself away slightly early. I'm not going to Southampton but will be at Shepherds Bush Empire and the Exeter gig! :)

Yeah, the main hall is little more than a very big room. You shall see for yourself ever so soon.

I have a nice present for Pete as well.

I'll probably be wearing a bright red hoodie tomorrow night with the Sigur R?s 'sleepwalker' logo on the front of it. Say hello or be a poohbag.

The gig hasn't had much local publicity - there was a small photo of Pete and literally two lines in the local paper under the upcoming gigs for the next week. That was all. Bigger fools them, and all the more lucky us!

There's me, seeing the Dukester in a couple of hours and having you lot calling me scary. I shan't be able to enjoy myself tonight now. Well, maybe a bit.

You know I'm actually a professional ghost-hunter and tour guide and Jack The Ripper tour guide as well? What on earth could be seen as scary?

Hello all.

Just got back from the Aldershot gig. WEIRD!!!

There was only about 100 people there. Pete didn't have the piano casing tonight but was backed by Paul and Ben (and Beth) as well as Chip against my expectations.

Lots of new material tonight (a full Minidisc recording was made...). Pete said before PORTRAIT that yesterday he had recorded a version of it in FRENCH in Paris with a French chanteuse whose name meant nothing to me, so there's a scoop for you.

I got a set list at the end so here's the run-down :

ALL THIS HAPPINESS IS OUT OF CONTROL
BRIXTON LEAVES
EVERYBODY WANTS A LITTLE SOMETHING
BALLAD OF A BROKEN MAN
SLIP OF A GIRL
AIN'T GOT NO, I GOT LIFE
WAKE UP SCARLETT
LAST NIGHT I NEARLY DIED
PORTRAIT
LOVE IS CONNECTION
CARELESS HEART
SALVATION TAMBOURINE
NO COVER UP
---
FREEWHEEL (PIANO)
I LET YOU DOWN
---
THIS MIGHT BE HEALING

The last track Pete had only just written and did it with the lyrics written out in a notebook in front of him. The set was 76 minutes. I got masses of photos from the middle of the front row, most of them really bad. The lighting was so low that non-flash photos ended up blurred and we were so close that flash photos ended up whited out. I'll see what I can do and post them up here, maybe tomorrow.

More happily, I think I have at least 15 minutes of the set captured on MPEG, mostly whole songs. These will be going up on YouTube and, again, I'll paste the links.

Odd that he didn't finish the main set with SALVATION TAMBOURINE. The crowd was unusual. They were very nice and appreciative but once the whoops and claps after each song had finished, the hall would be in silence. There was very little singing along (except for me) and though I wanted to rock out, I felt I was almost alone so I didn't. I had a few exchanges with Pete during the set, though, and worried I might have been getting on the audiences nerves...

Chip jumped on me during I LET YOU DOWN which will be on the video clip.

Beth Rowley was supporting. She has an amazing voice - sounds a bit like Bjork to me, and her backing singers were great too. A very tight act. The material wasn't really my cup of tea (bluesy/jazzy/gospely) but it was nevertheless enjoyable.

I ran into an old schoolfriend for the first time in 20 years a few weeks ago and he came to the gig on my recommendation. He was blown away by it and told me the gig had actually had him in tears (blimey).

Pete came out after the gig and chatted to those of us who were left. I remember a post from one of the regulars on this board a few months ago saying she met Pete's wife once and when she met her again she was staggered that she'd remembered her name. Well, happened to me tonight! When Pete came out I asked him if he remembered me and he replied "Of course I do - you're Philip, the guy who gave me the bag of 78s in London". It had been three months ago! What a guy!

I'd also like to say thanks and hi to all the people from the board who came up to me tonight to say hello. I was quite surprised; I ended up wondering if it was Pete who was the celeb or me! A lovely evening and I'm quite on a high from it.

I'll, as I say, post the photos and videos up very soon. It's late now and I've got to go to work in the morning (boo). Cheers, all.

Really good gig last night, although I wouldn't recommend going to a gig when you have to get up for work at 5.30 the next morning- I got 5 hours sleep last night!
But I can safely say it was worth it...

It went very well for a 1st gig of the tour (well in the UK Anyways).. lovely to see them in a small venue, and even though it wasn't sold out it was a very good crowd.

I love the fact that no one was from Aldershot - it shows that he can pull a crowd regardless!

Nice to see lots of smiley people - I was the girl handing out the Duke Special flyers in the Bar area in case you were wondering!

May see some of you in Southampton this evening... Right it's time for some coffee for me! - Oh the joys of working in London!

I resisted the temptation to enthuse wildly on this board last night, but my impression of the gig (and I don't usually do impressions ...) was that it was a fabulously intimate experience, but lacking the audience response that it deserved.

Duke was on good form and Beth was a revelation - and, as Philip said, although the audience were appreciative, they were a tad reserved.

I was singing along ! Hopefully no-one nearby was distracted.

I've only got a couple of pictures, sadly nothing matching the quality of yours Philip.

Duke was very approachable in the bar afterwards as the photo of him and Chip with the friends I dragged along (mostly newbies!) will testify.

Great gig.

And what a tour bus !!

What a charming evening! How polite and very well behaved everyone was, really very strange, but nonetheless a great evening. Particularly enjoyed Beth Rowley, really impressive stuff so look forward to more of her tonight in Southampton. Had her parents there with her which was particularly sweet.

Best bits? The numerous Aldershot shout outs, particularly as no-one in the audience was apparently from there. Chips comedy fall into the audience but still making it back for the beat. Wondering if Petes dread would get caught in the gramphone stylus. They guy front row stage right who rocked out even in the quiet bits - that's someone in the zone! The Pete and Paul hide and seek routine. "This has been the best night of the Tour" ;o) The tour poster (Paris, Aldershot... classic ;o) and the fab merch - got myself a wicked limited edition box-set of 7", the whole album on 6 discs, one track each side. Mine is 581/1000 - anyone else got one?

Worst bits? Just the audience who all seemed to want a metre radius around them - everyone could have been within a couple of metres of the stage if people had squidged up a bit. I got stuck behind people when there would have been room to nip in front - but with the weird atmosphere I felt it'd be rude to push in - everyone was so polite and nice there!!! Still, had a private boogy and singalone to myself in my own 1m2 dancefloor.

Totally converted my brother and sister-in-law last night - he's headed off on a 4 hour drive today with both Duke and Temperance CD's to keep him company on the road!

Phil, good to meet you last night, glad you felt like the celeb ;o) Hope he liked the Picnic gift. And hi to chap with 12 year old son seeing his 2nd gig - I'm definiately going to try and get my niece to a gig at some point, she'll be musically inspired!

I got 5 hours sleep too! And my mind's not really on my work today - it's bouncing ahead and looking forward to the Shepherd's Bush Empire on Tuesday!

That was a fantastic gig last night and a great intimate venue. I didn't think the audience were too quiet, just respectful and there was a fair bit of banter going on. The 2 songs I really wanted to hear were played - "Ain't Go No..." cos it had sounded so amazing on the radio the other night, and "Careless Heart" which I love. It was great to hear new songs amongst the older stuff and Freewheel sounded fresh again as a pared down version. Actually all the songs sounded amazing and I'm really pleased Ben Castle's in the band for this tour. Sadly there wasn't a vaudevillian "in the audience" singalong at the end but we did get treated to a brand new song to finish (I thought was called "This might be human" but was obviously "This might be healing").

And I didn't have the dilemma of dragging myself away before it had finished as it ended in time for me to catch the London train I needed. Phew! Also, I got to listen to the whole gig again on the way home as it had recorded perfectly on my dictaphone, despite it being in my bag the whole time!

Thanks for posting the video clips, Actorguide, I managed to watch "Ain't Got No" just before work started and will watch the rest later!

Aha, yes indeedy blonde woman who was celebrating her '04'th birthday! Your friend did come up to me last night and say hi so it was probably her.

The guy rocking out stage right? My best mate. I was so embarrassed. Not only does he dance in the classic 'dad' style but to a slow piano-only version of FREEWHEEL? Thank God I wasn't actually standing next to him. This is the guy who, at a Cranberries gig in 1995 was punching the air to LINGER and screaming the words "Do you have to live in England?". Think about it. He thought they were the words.

Glad the vids are going down so well. Pete was chuffed with the TEDDY BEARS PICNIC 78 and he's asked me for some certain ones for Shepherds Bush. I asked him how I'd get them to him and he said "Oh, I'll find you!"

In regards to the scary avatar, this will explain all...

Bum. I can't post up images in a normal way on this new forum. Any ideas?

Anyway, I shall explain. I'm an actor by profession but I don't do much these days. This was at the end of a national pantomime tour of Humpty Dumpty. I was Jack (of Jill fame) - less or more scary now you know this?

Hiya - I was the guy at the gig with my son, Euan, he had a whale of a time and WHAT A VIEW - right in front of the man himslef. My son has SATs next week and this seemed a perfect way to help him relax before the stresses of next week. When Duke sang he was in awe - I could see 'that look' on his face, his eyes transfixed to Duke. I wish more people would take kids along to gigs, just as I wish venues (no criticism of the cool West End Centre here as their ticket price could not be knocked) would charge 'under 16' prices.

I got a stack of pics which I'll upload to flickr later.

My son and I were privileged to meet Peter after the gig and thanks to 'Actorguide' for persuading me to be in the pic of Peter and my son. Also Chip chatted to my son and I for quite a while - I hope to be able to get him to come do a drum workshop at my school soon.

Euan didn't stop talking about the gig all the way back in the car, until he fell asleep - bless him. He has a lot to tell his mum when he sees her next.

I loved the intimacy of the venue - but having seen him at Water Rats and The Windmill previously, I am used to these smaller venues more than the Shepherds Bush Empire that is to come next week.

The quietness of the audience, whilst lacking atmosphere - was a pleasant and welcome change from many London venues where many people show little respect to the performer - I'm reminded of the idiot in front of me who yelled to his friend he wanted a 'pint of Guiness' just as Rodrigo y Gabriella were playying a beautiful, quiet tune. (Speaking of them if you don't know of them - they are awesome and on at Shep Bush Empire for 3 nights the week after Peter is and they are INCREDIBLE - the same friend who introduced me to Pete also introduced me to them too).

I loved the fact that Pete had the words to the final song on a wee notebook - which inspired my son as that's what he does - writes songs in little books and bits of paper.

Beth Rowley was a perfect counterpoint to Pete's voice used as and when appropriate. With her I was reminded of Howe Gelb's last 'Sno Angel Like You' album.

It was a pleasure to meet such a friendly group of fans and I hope to say 'Hi' at the Shep Bush Gig next week.

PS I was next to Mr Manic Dancer - and well done him for getting 'into' it :) even if sometimes his timing was a little off.

When I first heard "Songs from the ..." back in February, I was captivated. I played it incessantly and eventually found some guitar tabs to several of the songs. I then proceded to play these incessantly such that my daughters (6 and 9) knew all the words to at least three songs.

I went to the WEC a week before to pick up my 21 tickets (!) and was so impressed with the friendly staff who showed me around the whole centre and chated enthusiastically about what they do there, that it was my intention to take my daughters to see Duke before the show.

Sadly, it didn't happen as I was tied up at work :(

I don't suppose I'll get such a good opportunity again and, although he said it was his 'first' time in Aldershot, I'm guessing it will be a looooooong time before he plays there again ;)

Kids like your music too Duke - so you're assured of a long career !

I'm in 2 minds whether or not to go to the Shepherds bush gig tomorrow night...

I don't know what to do.. I have 2 tickets, and no one to go with!!!!

ooh, Amy - you've got to go, otherwise you'll be kicking yourself! How are you getting there? I can meet you beforehand if you like. I'm meeting my gig buddy in the Wetherspoons before we go into the venue. Do you know where you're meant to be sitting?

Amy - Cali and I are going (and we also have 1 spare ticket) if you want to hook up.

Phil - thanks for more photos, great keyboard shot!. Nice work exposing Eddie as the Bez of the evening, will he be entertaining us at Shep Bush?! Didn't realise you were at Southampton too!

WoodenRabbit - thanks for id'ing yourself, and so glad your son had a good time. Been thinking of taking my niece to a gig and know Duke would be perfect if the venue is right. Also thinking of GuilFest as a first festival - whaddya think?!

Hi Jules

I wasn't at Southampton. I just liked commenting on it.

I'm going tomorrow and will probably be there early. Pete is expecting me and I won't have much time afterwards (it's a secret).

Eddie is indeed coming tomorrow. If he starts dancing in his seat I will hit him with a cheese grater.

As for Guilfest - this year's line-up is rubbish so far (largely) but it is a wonderful, wonderful thing. It's totally free of nastiness and violence, the weather's always great, there's masses going on, it's all family friendly. Smashing place. Duke would storm the place if he played it. Wish he would! It's tailor-made for his music. And, living in Guildford, I can go to the festival each day and walk home!

Amy - come to the gig. You might not enjoy it as much as you would if you had your chap with you, but you won't enjoy it at all if you're not there. No question.

DukeOfCad - Hope you're OK with me using the shot you took of Pete & me at Aldershot as my new avatar. Blurred or not, it takes about 15 years off me!

Ok... I didn't make it to the gig last night...

Mat just looked so dopey eyed and vunlerable when I picked him up yesterday, I just didn't have the heart to abandon him...
Plus I didn't get back until 6.30.. by the time it would have taken me to get ready, get the train etc it would have been quite late PLUS I still would have had to get up for work at 5am this morning...

And to make it all even better, I had to have a cold shower as the Hot water tank at Mat's is up the duff..

All in all, my boy is ok if not a bit sore in the tooth (pardon the expression!) and I'm glad I could look after him last night.
But if this Brighton date ever gets confirmed, we're going - no questions asked.
