Hi there guys, just heard about this. Not really sure of much in the way of details but Foy Vance has a rescheduled date in Switzerland for this date and on his website has announced that Duke will also be playing it. Sadly I wont be able to go but anyone who can make it I will be insanely jealous of. Sounds like a killer gig with two of my musical heroes together! If I hear more details Ill post.

I'm planning to get to this as I have a friend living very near the venue.
I'm not a Foy fan, but am willing to be converted.

Ok, someone over on that side of the ocean totally needs to adopt me.

Stephen I hope it will convert you! I believe Duke and Foy are incomparable so I cant say who I prefer more, but to have both on the same night will be truly special. Im hoping somebody will be there to get some amazing video footage of both Duke and Foy for all us unlucky boardies stuck at home!
This looks like a gig not to miss!
Like to go back to Switzerland whenever I can (lived there for three years.) - and it's half term. I see a trip to Basel (where I have friends) on the horizon, with a side trip to Brugg! :) :) :)

I spoke with Duke after the Leopardstown gig and mentioned Foy Vance. I have met Foy a few times after gigs in Vicar St when he supported Rodrigo e Gabriella and have his EP's and Album. I'm a fan of his music, he's a nice guy to talk to and I wished him continued good luck with his music and career. Anyway the point of my post is to say that Duke told me Foy and Himself would be gigging together in Switzerland.

After some thought I could actually be very tempted with this gig..... What's the nearest airport to the venue and how much would I be expecting to be set back? I am a student but I'd be willing to push at expenses for this excellent gig!

Cheapest tickets are usually to Geneva - unfortunately on the wrong side of Switzerland - however, having said that nowhere is that far away (Switzerland only being twice the size of Wales).
Zurich is by far the nearest airport. Don't know if any of the cheap airlines go there! Although, by the time you pay for the train fare to and from Geneva, it might be cheaper to fly to Zurich anyway!

I'm definately thinking about it, will just hopefully find some people to travel out of Belfast with first! Does anybody know how the gig will work? I know its a rescheduled Foy date so is he headlining with Duke supporting or is it a joint headline date?

Fizzy got tickets from the link she posted.
The return airfare for us with SqueezyJet (Luton/Zurich return) is only £63 each (dep Fri 29th Oct ret Mon Nov 1st)
Train from Zurich airport to Brugg (single fare = 18 swiss francs = £11.20) 1GBP =1.60 CHF
The bad news is that flights are tricky for you Andyru :(
If you have friends in the UK - visit!
I don't think that you can get a direct flight to Zurich from Belfast
If you can get the timings right, budget airlines like RyanAir (Belfast to Stansted) and maybe Air Berlin (Stansted to Zurich) might work but as expensive as Dublin to Zurich direct, £200+ return
Not sorted out our accomodation yet
'Diese beiden Musiker konnte man erst selten in der Schweiz sehen und der gemeinsame Auftritt im Salzhaus ist eine absolute Schweizer Premiere. Also nicht verpassen'.
For those who would like to know what it says on the site, here's a rough translation:
'These two musicians are rarely to be seen in Switzerland, and their combined appearance in Salzhaus is a complete Swiss primiere, not be be missed'.
Must get in contact with my Swiss friends...

Elviesleslie and Sacha have said they plan to come along and our friends Peter and Dorothy are joining us. We've been well impressed with Foy the couple of times we've seen him live and it will be wonderful to see them together :)

For anyone looking to go and still not arranged it might be worth looking at Swiss for flights, I've hooked quite a fee good deals with them over the last two ski seasons both from London and Birmingham to Zurich.
Now trying to work out if I can go......

Trains
Zurich seems to be the easiest airport - Googlemaps is very useful for trains (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&tab=wl)
Choose "Get directions"
Enter "Zurich airport" in the A box and "Brugg, Switzerland" in the B box. First you get car directions but select the train icon and you can then enter different times/dates for travel etc. The journey is under an hour and the site for the trains is here (English) http://www.sbb.ch/en/index.htm

Thinking now sadly that it will end up insanely expensive since Belfast doesnt do direct to Zurich. May quickly escalate my price range. Might have to sit this one out guys :( I'm now counting on the ever reliable Fizzys to provide me some excellent video footage of both Foy and Duke to help make up for my loss! Enjoy it guys, Im insanely jealous! Maybe next time theyll do a joint gig closer to home....

It is true. I'm the guy who brings them together to Switzerland. I'm greatly honored to have them together on our stage. The club is a beauty and there are only 120 seats. Hope to meet some of you at the gig. If I can be of any help about accommodation, let me know.

It's the looking into his eyes thing again! I'm surprised your family and friends aren't going with you RustyInn! I did try to warn them but judging by their reaction a couple of weeks ago I think I failed :p
:):) Finally booked my flight to Zurich, Switzerland with 'squeezyjet' as Mr Fizzy calls it - and thanks for the tip, Mike. They may be 'squeezy', but they are cheap!
I've got a friend in Basel who wants me to get her a ticket for the gig (and possibly another one), so haven't booked the tickets yet. (I'm banking on the fact that they are not going to be sold out!)

We will be squeezyjet alright but change of plan to Paris first and then a train to Zurich - Fizzy made me do it! We don't know where the Paris gig will be - if the movies are anything to go by you can see the Eiffel tower from every window in Paris so somewhere round there. :)

We therefore have two tix for the Swiss gig sitting on my desk in need of a good home..... yours in exchange for a pint if our paths cross at a DS gig (just frop me a PM and let me know where to post them to).

Now I know this is slightly of topic but Elvisleslie did you by any chance video any of Foy the other night? Would love to hear some of his new songs as he hasn't played a home gig in Belfast for almost a year now! I'm still fairly gutted to not be making the Swiss gig but I'm sure all of you boardies together will get at least one or two videos of the two musical geniuses in action!

Hey guys and girls,
It's Hanspeter form Salzhaus Brugg. The newspaper wants to do an (telephone) interview with some of the fans traveling to Switzerland for the gig (and of cause Duke and Foy). Any suggestions who would be willing to do so?
Best, Hanspeter
Viellicht kann ich helfen? Sie koennen ruhig ein PM schicken.
Looking at the other thread - Yes, the Fizzies and the Baldocks would definitely make great interviewees, as devoted fans!
If you want a different angle as well. I lived in Switzerland for three years, and I'm bringing a couple of friends to the gig to introduce them to DS. One is Swiss, and the other (English) has lived in Switzerland for a good number of years.

I'm sure there will be many boardies at Banbridge and I should add that you don't have to be a "boardie" to be a dedicated Duke fan! - we've met many (including a couple we're meeting in Switzerland) who love his music but are not tecchie at all. :)
Assessments done, and essential planning completed for colleague. I am off to pack for Switzerland. I can now FORGET about work for a whole week!
Thought about taking the train over to Schaffhausen from Basel for the gig there, as my friend is working that day, and I could have made a day of it (Schaffhausen is beautiful), but having looked at the train times back to Basel, I don't think it is possible. So it's a bike ride for me in the Basel area.
I haven't done this travelling by myself lark since I got married (Just visits to NI). Feeling a little nervous!
:) Can't wait for the gig at Brugg though, and spending time with different friends.

:) I'll assure you, I am not fit at all, Mr Fizzy! Bikes and I don't tend to get on at all on hills - I usually get off, and walk up!
Actually you'd be surprised how good Switzlerand is for cycling. I used to cycle everywhere when I was living there. There are a lot of very flat U shaped valleys.
As for Basel, I will be cycling along the river. Very flat!
See you in Brugg!

Well if Amsterdam was short and sweet then Brugg was long and satisfying!:p
The UK contingent arrived at the venue ( a beautiful 16th century church by the way with original beams which were so lovely that Duke in the latter parts of the set meandered his words into a description of the whorls within the wood!), which was in time to observe the magical process of artists sound check and set list creation. In Duke and Foys’ case this consisted of them both playing their respective instruments , trying out each others songs and lots on interjection with each other with ‘ that sounds great, lets try this, what about that song of yours that goes like this?, what chord did you write this in?, can you remember that time we played such and such in such and such venue, shit what are the words etc etc’! (you get my drift- it was a joy to behold).
The fabulous , happy and generous host Hans Peter then came out and introduced them in Swiss, pausing near the end to introduce the fans from the UK, going further to then list our home towns!! It gets better....... the whole audience (approx 120 peops all seated in Parisian style red clothed tables with flickering candles ) starting clapping and send warm smiles to our tables! Hans Peter said it was an honour to have us travel the distance to attend their venue! That was an absolute first for me!!!:D:D
Duke and Foy took turns in playing a huge amount of their back and current catalogue of songs. Separately we know that these guys are soulful, ingenious, emotionally charged performers with the ability to hold an audience in the palm of their hands with a single note but together they are dynamite.
They played separately, together, their own songs, each others’ songs, harmonised, jammed and played audience requests for 5 hours. They have the stamina of oxes!
I will as ever leave the musical review and videos to the board dads, suffice to say I loved each and every minute of it. New (and wonderful) experiences for me were Duke taking prompts from leslie for the lead sentence of a verse or two in ‘you’ve got to hide your love away’, and Foy singing into his guitar to make the most amazing sounds!
I am hoping that these two get together very soon as its’ a sight, sound and experience to behold! ;)

Some people cannot understand why you might travel afar to see your favourite musicians - missing Duke and Foy together for this gig for us would be like missing a European cup final that your favourite football team had just qualified for! Wonderful review Sachapink - although the fab building was a 17th cent Salthouse rather than a church - I guess you could say it was a soul house. Excellent vids from Mr Sachapink of course - and don't worry Andyru - lots more Foy.
We're still enjoying the delights of Switzerland and will post big time when we get back on Tuesday but must thank the marvellous Hanspeter for setting up this amazing marathon 5 hour gig of two unbelievably talented singer-songwriters. Hanspeter is no mean musician himself and treated us to some splendid flugelhorn and trumpet on stage!

welcome to the forum Esther:)
there are some foy vance videos from switzerland posted in the other bands/artist
Just back from a brilliant, brilliant week in Switzerland, catching up with old friends, doing lots of talking in German, walking and cycling in beautiful surroundings and in beautiful weather.
But of course the highlight was the gig in Brugg.
Where do I begin? I agree with everything Sacha says. Duke and Foy are two very talented musician, and combined they were a real 'tour de force'.
I had not heard Foy Vance live before, and will certainly go and see him again, any opportunity I get! He is an amazing live performer. He has an incredibly versatile voice and used his loop thingy (You can see how technical I am!) to produce some wonderful layers of sound. When Duke played and sang his beautiful, poignant songs, Foy produced some gorgeous layers of sound with his guitar and voice. He also had a second mike for his voice that created this haunting ethereal sound which suited Duke's songs so well. It was spine chilling.
At that point my Swiss friend turned round and said 'Wahnsinn' which means crazy/amazing/fantastic.
Wahnsinn just about sums up the gig.
My other friend and I had planned to catch the 11pm train back to Basel (thinking the gig would be over about then!!!), but she was enjoying the gig so much, she decided to go for the train that would connect us up with the last tram of the night.
As usual Duke managed to add a new dimension/bit of humour. When the guys came on stage, Foy hung up his coat and scarf on a hatstand, and they sat in a large red chair, sipping wine, as they listened to each other.
Then between songs, they played recordings of Swiss German from their mobiles. They must have gone round Brugg, hounding unsuspecting locals to say random things into the mobiles!
I have not managed to go to a gig that has quite hit the magic of my first DS gig, but the Brugg gig was very close.
A wonderful, wonderful evening.
One more thing. Duke and Foy, could you please, please, please do another combined gig in the uk? Please!:)
Do I get an upgrade form junior to senior specialist now :D
This was "a night to remember". All I had to do is book those two guys, make them feel comfortable and then sit back and enjoy.
Thanks for being with us in Switzerland and hope to see you all soon.
Hanspeter
Oh, and thanks to Hanspeter for organising a fantastic evening (Sorry, I didn't get a chance to introduce myself).
You certainly made them feel comfortable. ;) That Swiss wine goes down so easily! No wonder, you Swiss don't export it! It's just too good to share!

Super review robi and echo this sentiment - absolutely unmissable if they do perform together again as I hope they will soon. The respect they have for each other was very evident on stage and aside from astonishing musical taent they share a wicked sense of humour.
I'm not as efficient as Elviesleslie but I have finally got around to post two beautiful Duke songs that you don't often see performed live. I've always liked the sharp humour and philosophical message of the movie in Jack Nicholson's line "What if this is is good as it gets?" directed to his self-help group. A great film and I can see how it inspired a train of thought and a new Duke song...

We have not heard the lovely French/English song "Deep" performed live before and it came as a masterclass in voice during the lively marathon performance of the two masters!
