The OGs will be there in force. (it's Hayley's birthday). A few of you will remember 11th july last year (Killkenny gig). How time flies.
And if you can't remember 11 July last year ... you weren't there?! ;) .
Have a great time OG and family!!

I never expected to see any other boardies at the excelent gig last night, so I was shocked to bump into the Fizzys before the show. What was even more amazing is that they told me that they were at the Tory Island gig the night before. For those of you who don't know, Tory Island is situated 9 miles off the north west coast of Donegal.........Amazing!!
Respect to the Fizzys.

I totally agree Old Git but I know that they'll just say it's because Duke Special is amazing! (Which, of course, he is :D)

Nice of you to say so OG, but we agree with Delly and nominate runnerbean and Alice for boardie dedication. They had a far more arduous journey than us, travelling by bus from Belfast to Derry to Gortahawk for the ferry and an awful lot of walking! We just had a flight and a hire car to manage with our two friends from Stafford. We met another five fans from Belfast, two that had driven over and three that were on holiday on the Donegal coast. One girl of the three told me that she got terribly seasick and threw up three times on the ferry over but even including the prospect of the journey back, said it was well worth it to see Duke Special! That's what I call a fan! :)
(PS have just started a Tory Island thread)

Both lovely pictures OG although as Cian was also there Duke alternated between piano and centre stage and I think that most of the 450 people there got a decent view. I don't know what you thought about the venue but I was expecting a "big tent" and thought that the Water Festival organisers did a fantastic job on the marquee with genuinely professional sound and lighting. Fizzy has some very nice pictures and video to post - I'll just post this for now (she took it) as it was very apt for Duke and Ben bearing in mind their lack of sleep through Tory Island hospitality!

Great Video MrF. and yes I should have added that the Fizzys were also seated on the front row ;)
I kept looking across at mrsF to make sure she was videoing the show so I knew there would be good photos and videos to follow.

Telepathy!!!!
The trouble is Fizzy expects me to be a mind reader as as well sometimes.
Well what a slacker - no setlist. Added below and as you can see Duke's repertoire is so huge now he can mix and match different projects at will. I thought that having familiar/new/famliar/new worked incredbly well so that the audience got their favourites and a sampling of the newer material.
Carrick-on-Shannon setlist
Wake up Scarlett
Yvette's Song
Everybody Wants A Little Something
Sweet Sweet Kisses
Slip of a Girl
Soldier's Song
Tango Tangle
Portrait
Salvation Tambourine
I'm Still Standing
Digging an Early Grave
The Jockey Club
No Cover Up
Love Will Tear Us Apart (Joy Division)
Prop Man
AppleJack
Freewheel
(In Audience Encore)
Last Night I Nearly Died
Our Love Goes Deeper Than This
Old Bull and Bush
Sometimes a particular song stands out and on this occasion for me "No cover up" was beautifully sung and made a big impression.:)
I noted that Duke was selling INTTDWC and the new triple album particularly well but he did say that he was fading fast and missing table top Johnnie on merch :(
btw runnerbean having spoken to Ben quite a bit over the weekend I'm coming to think that he could be our King of the Duke fans! I've mentioned before that one unique aspect of Duke for me is that there is no song that I would "skip" - If he's singing I'm listening. It rang a chord then when Ben told us that Duke's setlists are the only ones when he uniquely loves playing each and every song - He's so talented that he could session with anyone but still it's Duke whenever he can. Also he'd give Duke the coat off his back if he needed it! :)

Don't overdo the praise runnerbean - you'll be giving Fizzy ideas!
We all know that Duke can both play piano and sing superbly, but when he has a piano player of Cian's ability I do think it's wonderful to see him up front and essential for many of the Hector Mann songs.
Even so, I was massively taken with Duke's performance at the piano of "No, Cover Up" and "Wake Up Scarlett" on the night. He had explained he was dog tired and his voice wasn't at it's best so that he avoided the high notes in "Wake Up Scarlett" for example. To me this made for an absolutely fascinating version with a touch of "World-weariness" but as much feeling and passion as always. Great show. :)

Is there any woodwind instrument that Ben can't play?

Fizzy did get a new camera at Christmas (Panasonic TZ7) which has a stereo mic which helps. While in no way detracting from her recording skills, the audience were especially quiet and attentive for the quieter songs and the acoustics as good as it gets at Carrick-on-Shannon. Compare results with the same camera and the rather more raucous audience on Tory Island! :)

Have you got a new camera?
Checked Panasonic TZ7 prices - it has now been superseded by the TZ10 (adds GPS but not enough for the £60+ upgrade for me). You can now buy the TZ7 for £188 delivered from Amazon which is a great price for a camera with key gig features - big x12 zoom (Leica lens), good in low light, zoom in movie mode and a stereo mic.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Panasonic-Lumix-TZ7-Digital-Camera/dp/tech-data/B001T0H0RG/ref=de_a_smtd
Please observe discreet camera gig etiquette like Fizzy though - No flash (high sensitivity mode), turn off camera AF assist light and any audio alerts, dim the LCD screen and don't distract your neighbours :)

Not possible.
If any fans agree please say so - we try to be as discreet as possible to report gigs on the board for those that can't make it but not if it's too distracting for those that can.

At gigs sometimes, someone uses flash...THAT is distracting and annoying to me personally and I would imagine to the performing artist too!
At one gig, a woman next to me had a very loud shutter volume -at the interval I (gently) mentioned it to her and she just hadn't known how to turn the sound off.
I can't see how anyone can be distracted by the discreet photography employed by most attendees (and most certainly not if you follow MrFizzy's important guidelines in the post above!!)
You only have to read the board to see how grateful people are to see photos and clips from shows that they could not attend and I am still wracking my brains as to what distraction is involved in the taking! [Maybe I have mainly been around considerate and discreet photographers?... or been so involved in the artists' performances that I haven't noticed what is going on around me?!]
Having sat beside both of the Fizzies at Duke gigs on numerous occasions I can assure everyone that it is perfectly possible to film without anyone noticing at all! Fizzy in particular is a whizz in this respect, camera sat discreetly on her lap. And we've all seen the results - they're fab! :D

I'm talking about video. There is nothing discreet about holding up a colourful screen, sometimes for entire songs at a time, without distracting the entire audience behind you.
Cameraphones and video recorders have ruined so many gigs for me I can't start to count. I hate them with a passion.
I yearn for the days when you bought vinyl records, had to buy concert tickets from your local record store and you brought back nothing but warm memories from gigs. :)
Oh I definitely agree with you about cameraphones Stephen. I went to see the Dead Weather in London a few weeks ago. We were sat upstairs and at points the place was virtually illuminated by held-aloft iphones and the like! But some of the small recorders, such as the one Fizzy uses, can be used almost invisibly these days.
I have to say, though, that the most distracting thing for me is (are?) the people who talk all the way through gigs. It drives me mental. How rude!! Why are they even there if they don't want to listen?! GRRRRRRR!
And please don't even mention ticket buying, ticket agencies and booking fees. My head might explode.
