Hallow

Duke Special’s beautiful 2017 album ‘Hallow’ is entirely based on the poetry of the eminent Belfast poet, Michael Longley, who was once described by his friend Seamus Heaney as ‘a keeper of the artistic estate, a custodian of griefs and wonders’. Full of gentleness, honesty, mischief and love, peppered with a cast of artists, animals, flowers, friends and long forgotten soldiers. As ever, Duke Special is mining a new seam of inspiration, always trying to get to the bottom of what it means to be human.

They wanted him to consider a collaboration with the Department of Photographs and an exhibition of the work of Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Steichen and Paul Strand. The songs on this recording are the result of a year’s living with the images, reading about the photographers, their subjects, their equipment and the times in which they lived and worked. I Never Thought This Day Would Come (Original Irish Edition)

£10 + postage

Duke’s second album, released in Ireland in October 2008. This is an album for sleepwalkers, skeletons and gravediggers, for those who have fallen so far down they can taste the soil between their teeth.

A more immediate and visceral collection than the previous multi platinum selling Songs From The Deep Forest, the album’s many moments of beauty and hope are juxtaposed with a dark, brooding edge- the trademark twist of the Duke.

Recorded between Wapping, London; Champaign, Illinois and Culleybackey, Northern Ireland, ‘I Never Thought This Day Would Come’ was produced by long-time collaborator Paul Pilot and mixed by Nick Terry, best known for his work with the Klaxons and The Libertines.

In a deliberate attempt to push outwards, Duke Special undertook many writing collaborations for this album including sessions with Daniel Benjamin - drummer with German punk band Jumbo Jet, Paul Pilot, Phil Wilkinson and Bernard Butler. The wind, brass and percussion of the RTE Symphony Orchestra, under the stewardship of the inimitable David Brophy, add a swirling carnival flavour to the proceedings.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS THE ORIGINAL IRISH VERSION OF THIS ALBUM. THE UK VERSION WITH 4 BONUS TRACKS RECORDED LIVE TO VINYL AT METROPOLIS STUDIOS IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE (BUT THOSE TRACKS ARE STILL AVAILABLE ON THE 7” ANNIVERSARY VINYL)
